Traffic chaos in Bad Dürkheim: Cell phones at risk of living!

reinforced traffic controls of the police in Bad Dürkheim recently attracted attention to the dangerous use of smartphones while driving. These measures were initiated after a serious traffic accident had occurred at the B37 intersection last week. The officials carried out controls within 90 minutes, in which no red light violations were registered. Nevertheless, a 30-year-old driver was caught from the Bad Dürkheim district who used her smartphone while driving. She must now expect a fine and a point in the driving suitability register. The police inspection Bad Dürkheim urgently warned that the use of cell phones at the wheel represents a significant risk of accidents that should not be ignored. Rheinpfalz reports about it.

The study by the Haufe Academy illuminates the alarming numbers that occupy the dangers of smartphone use in traffic. In 2022 there were a total of 173,069 accidents, which corresponds to an increase of 1.3 % compared to the previous year. In these accidents, 234 people were fatally injured - 16 more than in 2021. The main cause for many of these accidents is the distraction from smartphones. Between 10 and 36 % of all traffic accidents are attributed to the use of mobile phones at the wheel. This number is particularly worrying when you consider that distractions tend to be more pronounced during professional trips than on private car trips. The concentration also affects the concentration and increase the accident risks for employees. Haufe reports.

study on smartphone use in traffic

As part of an examination of smartphone use in road traffic, comprehensive monitoring of traffic safety was carried out. Here, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers were observed to get a more detailed picture. A total of around 201,000 road users took part in this survey, which took place in 17 survey regions in Germany. The results show that around 4.9 % of car drivers were actively busy with their smartphone while driving. This number increases compared to only 3.6 % of cyclists and 7.4 % of pedestrians who actively use their cell phones. It also shows that younger road users and men use their smartphones in road traffic much more frequently. Federal Institute for Roads.

The results illustrate the urgent need for measures to reduce distraction from smartphones in traffic. The complexity of the problems related to accident risks, especially among young and male drivers, requires targeted education and prevention strategies. Appropriate security cultures should be established in a modern transport system to sustainably reduce the number of accidents.
