Specialist conference on biodiversity: Experts looking for solutions in the Palatinate!
On March 1, 2025, the conference on the subject of “biodiversity in the agricultural landscape” took place in the Palatinate Market for Fruit and Vegetables eG in Mutterstadt. Around 70 participants, including farmers, conservationists and representatives of associations and authorities, followed the inviting words of the organizers. The subtitle "Current data and information from the Vorderpfälzer field and vegetable growing" underlined the goal of promoting the exchange between different actors and illuminating the relevant topics of biodiversity. According to Gabot was the impulse lecture by Dr. Oliver Röller, head of the Institute for Natural History in southwestern Germany, of central importance. He addressed the inventory of species protection in the Palatinate Rhine level.
An important part of the conference was the idea of two projects that deal with the preservation of biodiversity. The EFA project focuses on the biotope appreciation and biotope networking on open and intermediate areas without arable status. The second project, "Palatinate Market creates biodiversity", focuses on species screening in vegetable cultivation in order to use the knowledge gained for new species protection areas. Both initiatives aim to ensure the permanent preservation of biodiversity in the Palatinate, especially in the arable and vegetable regions.
results and lectures by leading experts
The results of the two projects were presented as part of the conference and the potential for more species protection was discussed. Experts gave lectures on six different groups of animals: birds, reptiles, bees, murder beetles, butterfly and spiders. In addition, Lisa Hausmann spoke about "Agriculture and Nature Conservation: Production Integrated Compensation Measures in Agriculture" and Bernd Hartmann about "e-learning modules on biodiversity in agriculture". The final discussion, moderated by Dr. Reinhard Speerschneider, addressed essential points for the future of nature conservation in the agricultural landscape.dr. In his closing word, Oliver Röller emphasized the importance of priority areas for nature conservation. It became clear that the challenges in the area of biodiversity must be addressed comprehensively and sustainably.
model projects and nationwide initiatives
Another aspect addressed during the conference was the model project F.R.A.N.Z. (For resources, agricultural management & nature conservation with the future) that has existed for eight years. This joint project by the environmental foundation Michael Otto and the German Farmers' Association aims to develop and test measures to strengthen biodiversity in agriculture. Agricultural companies work closely with research institutions and nature conservation. The project is scientifically accompanied by the Georg August University Göttingen and the Thünen Institute and receives support from the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture as well as the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Security and Consumer Protection. According to Federal Government show the first results of the measures positive trends with regard to biodiversity and individual flora and fauna numbers.
In the context of this initiative, the focus is on the implementation of flower strips and year -round ground cover. These efforts promote biodiversity and quality of life of the soil, which is a key role for agriculture. The farmer Friedhelm Dickow reported on positive experiences and emphasized the need to integrate measures into the operating processes. In summary, it can be said that both the conference in the Palatinate Market and the initiatives such as F.R.A.N.Z. are of central importance for the preservation of biodiversity in the agricultural landscape. The joint efforts of agriculture and nature conservation are crucial to manage the challenges in species protection.Details | |
