Bicycle boom: The district is planning cycling paths for a mobile future!

On April 10, 2025, it can be seen that the bicycle is increasingly recognized as an important means of transport in Germany. District Administrator Bettina Dickes emphasizes the importance of the bicycle in particular due to the ongoing trend towards the e-bike. In order to meet this trend, the district has commissioned a cycling development concept to improve the necessary infrastructure. In the meantime, experts outline the challenges that have to be mastered when expanding the cycle paths.

Andreas Geers from the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) emphasizes that there is no need for the necessary bike paths on Alzeyer Straße, Wilhelmstraße and Salinenstrasse. These gaps in the infrastructure not only cause uncertainty among cyclists, but also contradict the current trends in mobility. GEERS emphasizes another problem: For cyclists, diversions across the train are missing, such as over the Löwensteg. Participants of discussions on traffic planning criticize a strategy that prioritizes the car as a main means of transport without considering sufficient bicycle traffic.

The long -term growth trend is remarkable: in 2002 the proportion was still 9.3 % of everyday life and only 2.9 % of the kilometers of people. E-bikes contribute significantly to the positive development and enable drivers to cover longer distances. Burkhard Stork, managing director of the two-wheeler industry association (ZIM), is optimistic about the results and points out that the federal government has invested billions in cycling infrastructure since 2017.

strategies to improve the cycling infrastructure

programs such as "Stadt und Land" should help to make cycling more attractive and safer. The changes in mobility behavior, caused by Corona pandemic and the introduction of the Germany ticket, significantly influence bicycle traffic. If the infrastructure is expanded, Stork also expects better figures in the next “mobility in Germany” study in 2028.

Developments in the field of cycling infrastructure are crucial to meet the current challenges and to make the bicycle and e-bike boom sustainable. This requires coordinated efforts on the part of the municipalities, associations and the federal government to set the course for future -proof mobility.
