Wahl-O-Mat 2025: Your guide for the Bundestag election on a click!

The Wahl-O-Mat, an interactive online tool, is now available for the upcoming Bundestag election 2025. Developed by the Federal Center for Political Education (BPB) in cooperation with various political parties, the Wahl-O-Mat offers the citizens a free way to test their political views and to find out more about the positions of the voter parties. Users answer 30 questions on various political issues and ultimately get an overview of which parties will come closest to their opinions. This function is particularly important in view of the current challenges such as climate change, digitization and economic development.

The Wahl-O-Mat is not only a valuable help for the first voters and undecided, but also appears as an instrument to promote political consciousness. The tool does not require personal data so that the use is anonymously. All parties with a state list for the state elections are represented in the Wahl-O-Mat. Users can either agree, remain neutral or reject theses. These entries are then evaluated, and a graphical overview shows the percentage agreement with the election programs of the elected parties. [Antenne-kh.de] reports that the tool represents an easy way for comprehensive information before the election and does not give an election recommendation, but rather represent the parties and their programs.

low voter turnout as a challenge

The falling turnout in Germany is an acute problem. Historically, the number of non -voters has more than doubled since the Bundestag election in 1983. In the last federal election in 2017, the non -voter share was 23.8 percent. [bpb.de] points out that citizen participation in elections in Germany has tended to decrease since 1949, which has led to discussions about the legitimacy of the parties and the political system. Some experts see signs of increasing party and political disenchantment in the decreasing turnout as well as social and economic dissatisfaction.

The Wahl-O-Mat could play an important role here by helping the citizens to deal with the topics and positions of the parties. The use of the tool could help to understand more citizens their individual political preferences better and to bring information on the ballot box. The possibility of comparing political points of view in a clear form could in particular help younger voters to actively contribute to the democratic process.

a sign of modern political culture

Political culture in Germany is developing. There are more and more voters who decide independently and at short notice, which also leads to an increase in protest voters and parties. The turnout for years has not only perceived as negative by many; It can also be interpreted as an expression of a changing political attitude. According to [Süddeutsche.de] there are a growing number of citizens who are less oriented towards traditional parties, but prefer alternative political commitment forms such as NGOs, from Attac to Greenpeace.

In this context, the Wahl-O-Mat offers a platform to promote political participation and to better understand the true mood of the electorate. In view of the falling turnout, a targeted use of interactive tools could be decisive in order to include more people in political discourse and to arouse their interest in democracy.
