Play and listen: Clinic concert in Bernkastel-Kues!
Next Wednesday, February 12, the 142nd clinic concert of the Bernkastel/Wittlich association hospital will take place. This event promises a unique experience that is under the title "unpredictable and unplannable". From 7.30 p.m., visitors are invited to the Cusanus hospital in Bernkastel-Kues, where impulses are set for musical improvisations in the dance and movement hall. All interested parties are welcome to actively participate or simply listen.
The participants in the concert are three experienced multi-instrumentalists: Theo van der Poel, who has been a music therapist for 24 years and organizes the clinic concerts, will lead the event. He is supported by David Mann, a music therapist and jazz pianist practicing since 2023, as well as by the freelance music therapist Rita Luysberg, who has experience in flute and music therapy. The instruments used as part of the concert are designed in such a way that they can also be played by people without musical knowledge, which creates an inclusive atmosphere.
commitment to musical integration
The clinic concerts are not only a platform for musical performances, but also part of a comprehensive therapeutic approach. Since the start of the concert series in 2023, which began with the concert "From Baghdad zu Bach", various styles and cultures have been connected.
The first concert of this kind took place on May 3, 2023 in the St. Elisabeth Hospital in Wittlich, where Arab music met the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. This merger aims to overcome cultural and musical borders and to address a wider audience. Entry to these events is always free of charge, which promotes accessibility for both patients and the general public. Among the artists were Theo van der Poel and Angela Simons, a classically trained cellist, and Saif al-Khayyat, an oud player from Baghdad.
therapeutic perspectives of music
The importance of music therapy in the clinical context is undisputed. In Freiburg psychosomatics, which was founded in 1949, the positive influence of musical interventions on the health of patients can be seen. Among other things, the clinic deals with people with depression, anxiety disorders and burnout. Various methods are used here that contain both psychotherapeutic and creative elements.
In psychosomatic treatment, music therapy has been established for 20 years. It does not require musical knowledge and enables patients to actively participate in therapies. The form of therapy not only promotes the creative expression of the patient, but also creates a valuable connection between the therapist and the patient.
The events such as the clinic concerts are a sign that music is not only art, but also has a healing force. The call for playing and active participation goes beyond listening and promotes the interaction, an element that is enriching for both the artists and the audience. Whether as a therapist or as a layperson - everyone can become part of this musical journey.
