insights into Ewald Mataré's work

The workshops are part of the comprehensive Mataré exhibition 2024, which takes place in the Kurhaus Kleve Museum. This shows the entire artistic work of Ewald Mataré, an important sculptor, medalist and graphic artist, who was born on February 25, 1887 in Burtscheid (today Aachen) and died on March 29, 1965 in Büderich. NRW Tourism emphasizes that the exhibition of Matarés in Berlin, his international successes and also the challenges of his career in the Third Reich discussed.

In a total of 20 rooms, visitors can not only experience the stylized animal sculptures of Mataré, but also significant sacred work, including orders for Cologne Cathedral. The atmosphere of his home café in Berlin is impressively revived by the appealing architecture of the museum. In addition to the exhibits, current research results from the newly created Mataré Archive are presented, which was also significantly expanded with a generous donation from 2023.

Matarés Lebenswerk

Ewald Mataré is one of the most important artists of classical modernism in Germany. His life's work comprises around 600 plastic works, 400 woodcuts and 300 drawings and over 200 watercolors. Mataré was born in a Catholic family and grew up in wealthy conditions. After completing his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, he developed his own style, which changed from realistic representation to stylized and abstract forms. He had a significant impact on modernity in the art scene in Germany.

his artistic work was also overshadowed by the political situation of his time. In 1933 the National Socialists withdrawn his professorship, and many of his works were confiscated as part of the "degenerate art" campaign. Nevertheless, Mataré continued his work and later achieved recognition, both at home and abroad.

The registration options for the workshops are diverse: Interested parties can register at the reception during the museum opening hours, Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Alternatively, telephone registrations are also available at 02821/75010 and an email to Recehr@mkk.art.

With these events, not only the legacy of Ewald Mataré is recognized, but also introduced to art younger generations to art. The combination of practical experience and dealing with one of the most important artists in German modernism is a successful opportunity to experience art alive.
