Eklat in the White House: Selenskyj and Trump fail due to raw material deals!
On February 28, 2025, there was a scandal between US President Donald Trump and the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj. The planned visit, which provided the signing of a raw material deal between the USA and Ukraine, ended without agreement. The demolition of the meeting was announced in an official confirmation from the White House.
The conflict was mainly about linking US aids with access to Ukrainian raw material reserves, especially rare earths. Trump was angry with the failed attempt to sign an agreement and described Selenskyj as the "dictator". The Ukrainian President had refused to sign a revised draft, which led to the disappointment of the US Finance Minister Scott Bessent, who returned from Ukraine without progress.
failure of the agreement
context and future perspectives
Ukraine has one of the largest lithium reserves in Europe, estimated at 500,000 tons. Despite a strategic interest in these raw materials, dismantling is currently not commercial and around 40 percent of metal resources are under Russian control. Before the war there were even efforts by the EU to build a strategic partnership about access to rare earths with Ukraine.
In the meantime, an agreement on the raw material agreement between the USA and Ukraine is still necessary. A joint reconstruction fund was considered in which Ukraine should deposit 50 percent of its future revenues from raw materials and infrastructure. However, security policy issues are still open, and the military situation in Ukraine worsens, which raises serious concerns.
In addition, Trump emphasized the economic advantages of the agreement and criticized his predecessor Joe Biden. US access to these raw materials is seen as a kind of consideration for arms deliveries to Ukraine. However, the demolition of the meeting and the unification of the unit to be made could have far -reaching consequences for the diplomatic relationships between the two countries.
