New investor in Traben-Trarbach: Hope for tourism or trouble?

In Traben-Trarbach, a new flood-resistant ship investor for the shipping company Viking was recently installed, as . Mayor Patrice Langer informed about the arrival and installation of the investor at the Hotel Anker in a Facebook post. However, the preliminary use of the investor remains restricted because cruise ships are not allowed to invest at night as long as the transformer is not yet operational.

Citizens of Traben-Trarbach see possible economic advantages in the new investor, especially for the catering and the wine industry. At the same time, however, there is also considerable criticism. Opponents of the project express concerns about possible noise pollution from increased shipping traffic. A local citizens' initiative also questions the city's touristification and demands a sustainable development of tourism.

petitions and concerns of the residents

on change.org is currently running a petition against the expansion of the ship's investor, which was designed for 135 meters long cruise ships. Viking plans to have a cruise ship created here from April to December on 88 days, which corresponds to 2-3 days a week. If the investor is also used by other shipping companies, this could increase the number of landings to 4-5 days a week. The concerns of the residents include not only the burdens of noise and exhaust gases, but also the potential disruption of local tourism and the effects on the historical cityscape.

Various demands are made as part of the petition, including the protection of the historical character of the city and the inclusion of the residents in future decision -making processes. The urgency of this petition is underlined because the contracts between the city of Traben-Trarbach and Viking have not yet been finally determined.

sustainability in focus

The concern for the environment and the quality of life of the residents is particularly relevant if you critically look at the effects of cruise tourism. According to information from various sources, cruise tourism often receives negative reviews, especially with regard to environmental compatibility. Planet Knowledge indicates that cruise ships use heavy oil and have a high CO2 emissions.

In addition, studies have shown that cruise tourists spend an average of three times less money in the cities worn than hotel vacationers. This allows the fears that the hoped -for economic benefit for the local population may not be met by short -term cruise tourism.

In view of the new developments, the city of Traben-Trarbach will closely observe the effects of the new ship's jacket on the community in the coming months. While supporters see investors as an important investment in the future, the opinions of the citizens are divided and show the challenges associated with the balance between tourism and quality of life.
