Strike in the public service: a day of demands and changes!

in Rhineland-Palatinate several fires were reported on March 7, 2025, while ongoing in various daycare centers and clinics. This strike, organized by the service union ver.di, aims to increase the pressure in the current collective bargaining dispute for the public service. Despite serious challenges such as the high workload, the unions are calling for more wage justice and better working conditions.

The warning strike day not only falls on today, but also on the Equal Pay Day and women are pointed out. Christine Behle, deputy ver.di chairman, made it clear that the employees in the social sector, mostly women, suffer from massive double and triple burdens that result from work, childcare and care of relatives.

strike and collective bargaining

The strike is aimed at over 2.5 million employees in the public service. On February 18, 2025, the collective bargaining remained with no result, which led to the increased mobilization of the union. The Gender Pay Gap in Germany was 16 percent in 2024, and a survey among employees shows that many information suffers from the difficult working conditions and vacant positions. In particular in the areas of care, social work and daycare centers, the loads with 79.1 percent, 63.9 percent and 78.3 percent are correspondingly high.

The tariff demands include a fee increase of 8 percent, at least 350 euros per month, as well as an increase in surcharges for stressful layers such as alternating layer and night work. Ver.di also requires structural changes to improve working conditions. The majority of the employees in these professions are women who are additionally burdened by poor staffing.

fire warning and early warning system

At the same time, the emergency services in Rhineland-Palatinate are faced with further challenges. A warning message reports on a roof truss fire in Piesport in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district. Residents are asked to keep windows and doors closed to avoid health risks through smoke development.

To prevent future flood disasters, an early warning system on Sahrbach, a tributary of the AHR, was put into operation today. This is a first step to improve flood protection in the region.

The day is rounded off by the news that the Musikfestival Rock am Ring is sold out. This shows that despite the tense situation in the social area and in terms of weather risks in the region, the cultural life continues.
