Six Rhineland-Palatinate cities start digital cultural heritage offensive!
in 2025 Rhineland-Palatinate focuses on the digital recording and presentation of its cultural heritage. Six other municipalities were selected to receive support in the digitization of their historical peculiarities. Interior Minister Michael Ebling announced the new funding projects as part of the “Kuladig RLP” project. The selected cities are Alzey, Bernkastel-Kues, Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Horchheim, Hamm (victory) and Zeiskam
This new funding phase brings with it a realignment. It is based on three central columns, under which there is an annual change of topics. For 2025, the main focus is on the topic of "life paths in history: biographical search for traces", which should help the municipalities to combine significant personalities with their regional identity. The University of Koblenz will support the selected municipalities for a year to digitally record their history and cultural landscape objects.
The role of the University of Koblenz
The “Kuladig RLP” project is implemented by the Institute for Cultural Studies at the University of Koblenz-Landau and pursues the goal of systematically digitizing the cultural diversity in Rhineland-Palatinate. The annual funding from the Ministry of the Interior and for Sport Rhineland-Palatinate began in 2019 and has flowed into the project in recent years.
for 2025 and 2026, a grant of up to 284,000 euros has now been promised. Due to the high number of applications, six projects were selected this year instead of the originally planned five. Supported municipalities can receive up to 1,500 euros for the media design of their contributions, whereby the digitization of historical photos, drone shots and 360-degree photography counts among the measures.
digital accessibility for citizens
The digital participation of the citizens is significantly promoted by the project. The locals and visitors benefit from digital building guides and tours that are accessible via QR codes or via the Kuladig app. In the first six years of the project, 54 sub -projects have already been implemented in 56 municipalities, which produced around 600 digital media formats. University Koblenz reports.
The Kuladig Competence Center, which has been located at the South (SGD Süd) Structural and Approval Directorate since January 2022, also offers support for municipalities that have not been selected as model municipalities. This includes conceptual creation, data collection and processing as well as continuous project control.
On March 27, 2025, the kick -off event for the second pillar of the project will take place in the Kulturhaus Oberwesel, during which the topics related to the Federal Garden Show 2029 will focus. Interior Minister Ebling underlines the importance of the project, especially for rural municipalities, to make their cultural heritage digitally tangible. By incorporating volunteers into implementation, media literacy in the municipalities should be strengthened.
This extensive support will not only capture its cultural wealth, but also make it digitally accessible for future generations. The funding from the university and the ministry promises to develop a sustainable effect on the regional identity and the cultural awareness of the population.
