The SZ traffic sticker provides details about comprehensive construction sites, changes in bus line traffic, full closures of streets and several train failures.

The train connection of the RE9 line from Siegen to Cologne, which takes about 90 minutes, is particularly noteworthy. However, passengers report frequent delays and failures, which questions the reliability of this connection. Another problem child is the Rothaarbahn from Bad Berleburg to Betzdorf, which is also regularly affected by failures and delays. This situation could still be tightened due to infrastructural challenges in the region.

construction sites and traffic restrictions

The large number of construction sites in the region contribute to the current traffic situation. These include the extensive construction work on Bundesstraße 508 in Kredenbach and in Allenbach. A mega project that attracts public attention is the construction of a new roundabout on the Schleifmühlchen in Siegen. This first construction phase began in May 2023 and should contribute to improving the traffic situation in the long term.

In the middle of these challenges, the Siegener Zeitung has set up a WhatsApp channel to inform the population quickly and efficiently about current developments. The channel currently records around 17,000 subscribers who regularly keep up to date on the latest traffic reports.

Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan and Infrastructure Development

The federal government is responsible for the construction and preservation of the federal traffic routes, which are coordinated by the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan (BVWP). This plan contains all the currently planned projects and the maintenance needs for the next 10 to 15 years. The Federal Government is currently planning a new federal traffic and mobility plan until 2040 in order to integrate infrastructure and mobility. This is supported by a cross-departmental steering group that identifies priorities in the implementation of measures to accelerate the planning and approval procedures.

The current BVWP, which was decided in 2016, includes a total investment volume of EUR 269.6 billion, of which 141.6 billion euros are planned for the receipt of the existing networks. A need plan check (BPÜ) is determined every five years.

The progress in the transport infrastructure is crucial for coping with current challenges, especially with regard to the frequent train delays and the general traffic situation in the region. Serious measures to ensure mobility must be tackled promptly.
