In the municipality of Birkenfeld, an important decision was made today: The local council unanimously decided to join a special -purpose association for sewage sludge. The municipal sewage treatment plants in Bavaria produced around 5.5 million tons of sewage sludge in 2022, which corresponds to a dry mass share of around 274,200 tons. Despite the expansion of numerous sewage treatment plants, the amount of sewage sludge generated remained constant in the past decade. A clear tendency towards thermal treatment is evident in dealing with these waste products: 85.7 percent of the sewage sludge were used thermally in 2022, compared to 57.1 percent in 2012. Another positive decision concerns the support of the Birkenfeld sports club. The municipal council has decided to provide the association a voluntary grant of 5,091.74 euros for the water fees of the sports field irrigation in 2024.
