Fire runner in Saarbrücken: E-scooter burns in the stairwell!

On April 28, 2025, a fire occurred in an apartment building in Saarbrücken, Burbach, a fire that was triggered by an e-scooter in the stairwell. The Situation became more critical due to the strong smoke development, which many residents panicked.

Two residents jumped out of a window before the fire brigade arrived and slightly injured themselves. To alleviate the impact, they threw pillows on the floor. The ambulance service not only took care of these two injuries, but also two more people who were able to save themselves.

fire damage and emergency services

The fire brigade reacted quickly and was able to extinguish the fire quickly. The burned-out e-scooter was then brought outside, with the building being ventilated. Fortunately, the residents were able to return to their apartments after the necessary security measures. This fast reaction shows the importance of efficient emergency measures in such unexpected events.

fires caused by e-scooter batteries are not exceptional. A similar incident appeared on August 16, 2024 in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony. There, an e-scooter battery exploded in the basement of an apartment building, which led to a fire and four injuries through smoke poisoning. The exact causes of the explosion and the damage incurred are still unclear, which indicates the potential risks that arise from batteries.

fire hazard from battery technology

The incidents illustrate the dangers that can emerge from battery-operated devices such as e-scooters. According to a study by the Board of Trustees (KFV) in Austria, it turns out that only 25 % of e-bike-owned and 30 % of E-scooter-owned security measures take against battery boards. Over 200,000 e-scooters were registered in Austria in 2022, with a doubling for 2024.

The risks are alarming: a probability of 64 % for serious injuries and 7.8 % for deaths in the case of battery lords makes it clear how important preventive measures are. Frequent causes of these fire hazards are overloading, unsuitable chargers and mechanical damage. KFV recommends to choose high-quality devices to minimize risks.

When fires occur, it is crucial to always alert the fire brigade. The quick reaction of the emergency services in Burbach and the possibility of returning the residents to their own four walls are more than gratifying in this regard and a clear sign of successful emergency measures.
