New courses and impressive photo exhibition show Ukraine in Leverkusen!

On March 13, 2025, a special cooperation project starts in Leverkusen that brings the reality of Ukraine to the German city. The aim is to establish cultural connections between Leverkusen and the Ukrainian twin town of Nikopol. The project is funded by the Federal Foreign Office and the International Section of the German Volkshochschulverband, and participation in the courses is free of charge and open to all citizens, such as leverkusen.de reported.

The photographer group under the direction of Gabriele Dietrichs will begin on March 13, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. in room 203 of the Leverkusen forum with the course “Reflections - City Dilder”. The participants will deal with urban scenes, buildings and landscapes of Leverkusen and capture the city from a new perspective in a total of six sessions.

painting and exchange

The painting project "Connection" starts on March 21, 2025 at 5:30 p.m. in the VHS studio in the Bunker in Opladen, led by the native Ukrainian Elena Büchel. Here the participants work on half a canvas, also in six dates. A highlight of both projects is the final meeting, which includes video conferences with participants in Ukraine. These meetings offer the opportunity to discuss the motifs and effects of cityscapes from Nikopol and Leverkusen.

At the same time, the photographer Thomas Römbke would like to draw attention to the desperate location of the people in Ukraine with his photo exhibition “What remains” in the Petruskirche in Bürrig. The exhibition shows Ukrainian who stay in her country despite the war. Römbke brought impressive pictures during a trip to eastern Ukraine in September 2023, supported by organizations such as the blue-yellow cross and "Strong Life", which contrast the living environments in LWIW and Donetsk. The photos are kept in both color and black and white and also show moving scenes of war graves.

faces of the war

The portraits of most depicted are particularly touching, which are mostly male and in retirement age. These people are often too old to fight and too weak to flee. One example is the 74-year-old Oleksander, who freed his wife from the rubble of her house. Römbke's goal is to give the people of Ukraine a face and to present a different approach to reporting, which goes under the skin to visitors of the exhibition.

Visitors have the opportunity to sponsor a picture in order to provide support for people in war zones with a donation of at least 70 euros. The exhibition can be seen until January 7, 2024 in the Petruskirche in Leverkusen-Burir, such as "https://www.ksta.de/region/leverkusen/leverkusen-wie-ein-fotographer-Ukrainern-ein-gemen-will-707814" reported.
