Successful aid projects: Kunga-Ruandhilfe transforms Batwa villages

The Kunga-RuandaHilfe association, founded in Bullay in January 2015, is committed to supporting projects in Rwanda. The activities focus on sustainable help for self -help in order to enable the local people to make an economic pillar.

The main projects include the production of shoes in Batwa villages, which is supposed to create an important source of income for indigenous peoples. Further measures include the promotion of school uniforms and school fees as well as the provision of school meals. The allocation of scholarships and support in agriculture are also the central concerns of the association.

positive developments on site

The chairman of the association recently visited Rwanda and found pleasant progress. In recent years, Kunga-RuandaHilfe has invested over 400,000 euros in various projects. Sustainable progress has been made in particular in the regions of Rukomo, Tabagwe, Mute, Kisaro, Gikonko and Kansi

A focus is on the support of Batwa, an indigenous pygmia. Particularly noteworthy is the potato cultivation, which began for the first time to 5 hectares in 2021 and brought a yield of 28,000 kilograms. Each family received 200 kilograms of potatoes for their own use, and a joint account was created with 1,500 euros.

  • Each of the three Batwadörfer cultivates approx. 5 hectares of land.
  • The extension takes place alternately with potatoes, corn, wheat, passion fruits and fruit.
  • for a new initiative to equip the villages with cows, pigs, goats and chickens will need around 30,000 euros.

challenges and aid projects

The almost annual visits of the association in Rwanda were interrupted by Corona pandemic in 2021 and 2022. On February 14, 2023, however, a four -person delegation started the trip to examine the current projects and plan new initiatives. In 2020, 75,000 euros were also provided as food aid, especially for BATWA.

The state of Rhineland-Palatinate has financially supported the agricultural projects. Kunga-RuandaHilfe also cooperates with the Rotary Club Cochem-Zell to ensure the water supply of the Batwadörfer. With regard to the financing, the association is borne by membership fees and donations. From 2021, however, no donation certificates for amounts under 300 euros more will be issued.

development aid and partnerships

Development aid becomes more and more a decisive element for progress in developing countries. It includes numerous areas such as education, agriculture and health care. The association pursues an approach that respects the cultural identity of the Rwandic partners and acts at eye level, which is considered a sustainable method of funding that is also considered in the allocation of funding.

Rwanda has developed strongly since the Genocide in 1994. Despite the challenges of the past, the living conditions of the population have improved. With an area of around 26,336 km² and a population of around 11.92 million people, over 90 % of citizens live in the country, while the capital Kigali has around 1 million inhabitants. The association Kunga-RuandaHilfe makes an important contribution to coping with poverty, education and health in the region through its commitment.

The task of the association is only more complex due to the diverse challenges of development aid, but the successes of recent years show that the concept of helping to help self -help has positive effects on the life of people in Rwanda in the long run.
