Enthus about MINT girls: The day of action in Cochem should increase opportunities!
On March 8, 2025, the "Girls-GO4-MINT" campaign day will take place from Club Soroptimist Cochem. The centralized goal of this event is to inspire girls for technical professions and thus play an important role in the fight against the lack of specialists in MINT professions-i.e. mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology. The club is actively committed to the same educational and career opportunities for boys and girls, which is why this day is of great importance.
Despite the gratifying development that more than a third of the new students in the MINT area are women, it turns out that women are often more reserved when it comes to a career in the natural sciences. A press release from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) from January 2024 suggests that there are still many barriers for women that strive for diversified directions in the MINT sector.
hurdles for female mint specialists
A comprehensive study on the gender gap in the MINT area found that women have special requirements for their jobs and often suffer from unequal treatment. The lack of family -friendly working conditions and female corporate culture were identified as significant hurdles. These points represent great challenges for recruiting and binding female specialists.
A current survey shows that 56 percent of women in the MINT area have confidence in their market value, while this number is 67 percent in men. In addition, 68 percent of female MINT specialists consider a good work-life balance as an important characteristic of an employer. This requirement varies depending on the industry, whereby the attractiveness in high tech is highest (70 percent), followed by Life Sciences (68 percent) and IT (65 percent).
step to improve equality
In order to improve the situation for women in MINT professions, recommendations were formulated in various research work. This includes the introduction of flexible working hours, the abolition of unequal payment and measures to reduce prejudices and cultural obstacles. Mentoring programs and initiatives to promote women in management positions are also crucial to target the shortage of skilled workers.
Overall, it can be seen that increased funding and a strategic approach is required to overcome gender equality in the MINT area. The "Girls-GO4-MINT" campaign day should help inspire girls and give them the necessary tools to explore possible career paths in the MINT subjects. This commitment is not only important for the individual development of the girls, but also for the future of the MINT industry in Germany.
The challenges are great, but the will to make a change is noticeable. Events like this laid the foundation to inspire and train a new generation of women in technical professions - a step that is of great importance for both society and the economy.
