Müden celebrates the week of biodiversity: Prime Minister opens!

On April 29, 2025, Prime Minister Alexander Schweitzer visited the picturesque community of Müden to celebrate the Woche of Biodiversity. The event took place on the Krabaun, a disused vineyard that became the backdrop for the “Fascination Krabaun” festival, which was organized for the sixth time this year. The week of biodiversity is celebrated in the Moselle town of Müden and offers space to draw attention to the importance of biodiversity.

Prime Minister Schweitzer, who was recently elected as the new Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, came to the opening of the festival. The SPD politician was elected to the state parliament in the first ballot with 57 votes and thus follows Malu Dreyer, who resigned after eleven years of term for health reasons. Dreyer, who has been suffering from multiple sclerosis for a long time, announced her resignation three weeks ago.

Schweitzer roots and future plans

Schweitzer was previously Minister of Labor, Social Affairs, Transformation and Digitization in Dreyer's second traffic light government. His successor in this office becomes Dörte Schall, who was the last deputy of the mayor of Mönchengladbach. The political changes in the cabinet do not lead to noticeable changes because the proportion of women remains unchanged. However, the new Prime Minister plans to set new accents in education policy and to promote dialogue with the citizens.

The upcoming state elections are scheduled for 2026, and Schweitzer sees itself in the position of still governing with the Greens and the FDP. This could mean a continuation of the traffic light coalition, which began under Dreyer's leadership.

The importance of biodiversity

During the festival in Müden, the current situation of biodiversity was also pointed out. In Rhineland-Palatinate, land use and biodiversity are closely linked. The change in agriculture, in particular the intensification of cultivation, has led to an alarming decline in animal and plant species. The decline in stocks of formerly more frequent types such as the skylark and the partridge as well as the dramatic loss of valuable habitats is particularly worrying.

Some speakers during the celebration emphasized the urgency that society took responsibility for biodiversity -promoting land use. Despite existing agricultural environmental measures, the previous efforts are not sufficient. In order to significantly strengthen biodiversity in the agricultural sector in this country, 148 million euros are required annually, according to a study. With a population of over 4 million in Rhineland-Palatinate, this adds up to around 36 euros per inhabitant.

The Prime Minister emphasized in his speech that such initiatives can not only have local but also global effects on the preservation of our habitats. Against this background, the week of biodiversity in Müden is not only an event to celebrate nature, but also a necessary appeal for future measures to preserve the biological diversity in Rhineland-Palatinate.
