Future of the Conder Church: Students develop new usage ideas!
The Freundeskreis St. Remaclus is intensively involved in the preservation of the Conder Church. With the aim of preventing the sale of the historical site and keeping the church accessible to the public, a sustainable usage concept is now being developed. Architecture students of the Technical University of Gießen work under the direction of Prof. Peter Jahnen, an emeritus architecture professor and urban planner, on sustainable ideas for the Remacluskirche.
in a symposium that took place in the Dormitory of the Cochem Capuchin monastery and brought together 70 participants from different areas, the topic of dealing with no longer buried worshipers was discussed. Those responsible from the church, municipalities and politics as well as interested citizens took part in the discussion organized by the Friends of St. Remaclus Cond. "Churches are common goods," said Kirchenmanifest.de, which addressed the economic recovery of such facilities.
usage concepts and challenges
In the region there is a significant decline in the number of believers and tax revenue. According to Hermann Condné from the Episcopal Vicariate of General, around a third of the 1,900 churches and chapels in the diocese of Trier have become superfluous. In this context, the parish of Cochem becomes a pilot parish that merged on January 1, 2025. By March 2025, the Board of Directors must create a real estate concept to secure the future of the churches.
of the churches in the diocese are to be taken into account four for entertainment grants. The topics, sales or demolition are also on the agenda. In this context, Prof. Peter Jahnen presented 70 examples of possible follow -up uses from Western Europe, many of them reversible. This opens up opportunities for the communities to use the talents of their places of worship for educational offers, encounters and cultural events.
An open process for everyone involved
The development of a usage concept is an open process that should benefit everyone involved. Diocesque conservator Dr. Georg Breitner emphasized the public responsibility that is associated with the future use of churches. The first steps include the collection of basics and the development of usage ideas. A digital 3D model is created for the student master's theses in collaboration with Prof. Nikolaus Zieske from the THM Gießen, the measurement work of which will begin in March 2025
On April 25, 2025, an excursion of the students to Cochem is also due. In order to better limit the framework conditions and usage ideas, a project group should be formed. The student work will be submitted on July 23, 2025, with presentations in autumn, so that all interested parties finally have the opportunity to find out about the future use and potential of the St. Remaclus Church. Citizens and institutions are invited to contact the Freundeskreis St. Remaclus and actively participate in this process.
The initiative aims to preserve the cultural heritage of the region and to offer the citizens a platform for active participation and creative use, while the discussion about the economic aspects and monument protection is continued.
