Speyer 2024: A year full of events and surprises!

In 2024 there were numerous events in Speyer and the surrounding area that moved the citizens. The Rheinpfalz has created an interesting annual puzzle with 40 questions about the city, country, culture and sport. Participants have the option of gaining different prices by submitting the correct answers to the questions asked. The deadline for sending the answers runs until January 7, 2025. Employees of the Rheinpfalz and their relatives are excluded from participation.

The puzzle includes questions about various local topics, such as the blocking of the A61 in spring due to work on the Rhine Bridge and the loss of a natural monument in Lingenfeld. Another example is the latest construction project in Dudenhofen, which is a controversial luxury district at Speyerbach. Cultural events also find their place: The “praise” symphony of Mendelssohn was written in the context of Westphalian peace 200 years ago.

Review of significant events

As the website Wochenblatt-reporter.de reported, the year 2024 was also characterized by discussions and social cohesion. Central topics were the future of the city center of Speyer, the business development agency, protests by farmers and the increase in parking fees. An important building, the Speyer Cathedral, was visible until autumn 2024 without scaffolding, since renovation work is planned for the next six years.

In January 2024 it became known that the Galeria Kaufhof registered bankruptcy for the third time, with the branch in Speyer being preserved for the time being. There were also alarming reports about smooth ice accidents and the health situation of the population with the establishment of a self-help group for Long Covid patients. In February a sexual assault during the carnival caused horror in the community.

In addition, the events mentioned reflect the social cohesion and activities of the citizens, such as the different initiatives created by local organizations and groups. In the course of time, a variety of events, such as the Brezelfest in July or the Martin parade in November, came together with a focus on community and tradition in Speyer.
