Massive cyber attack on schools: Packer gaps uncovered!
On January 15, 2025, there was a massive cyber attack on the IT infrastructure of schools in Rhineland-Palatinate. According to it-boltwise it managed to infiltrate and install the systems of an external IT service provider. These attacks met 45 out of a total of 70 schools, which are looked after by the same provider. Regions such as the district of Germersheim with nine schools, as well as Speyer, several communities and the diocese of Speyer are particularly affected. The investigation is carried out by state criminal offices and the Cybercrime State Central Office of the Koblenz General Prosecutor's Office. So far there is no evidence of data outflow.
The IT service provider is currently busy checking the systems concerned and promoting their restoration. The restoration process should be completed by the end of the week. The incident reveals serious security gaps in the IT infrastructure of educational institutions and emphasizes the vulnerability of these systems compared to cyber attacks.
reactions and measures for IT security
The city of Speyer has already taken measures to improve its IT security strategies. Experts now warn that this incident could encourage other educational institutions to also think about their IT security strategies. The need for increased cyber security is underpinned by current statistics. According to
The increasing number of attacks is worrying: Statista notes over 2,000 attempts to attack per week in the education sector. The Data Breach Investigation Report by Verizon documented 1,780 incidents with compromised data last year. These trends show how important it is that educational institutions take their security measures seriously and adapt.
recommendations for improving cyber security
In order to prevent cyber attacks in the future, experts recommend basic measures, including:
- Securing networks and devices: Update software and hardware regularly, insert content filters, segmenters, follow guidelines for safe passwords.
- Enlightenment about cyber security: regular training for pupils and personnel, as well as promoting a strong security culture.
- Implementation of basic cyber security tools: continuous monitoring and the use of multifactor authentication (MFA) to reduce unauthorized access.
The incident in Rhineland-Palatinate is an urgent appeal to educational institutions to rethink and further develop their IT security strategies. The safety of the sensitive data can only be guaranteed by consistent measures and such a scenario will be prevented in the future.
