Kaiserslautern: New initiative to improve pedestrian security!
Kaiserslautern has taken a significant step towards increasing pedestrian security. From May 20, 2025, foot traffic checks will take place in the city, which are designed as part of a comprehensive project to improve footpaths and pedestrian security. These checks are supported by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Economics, Transport, Agriculture and Viticulture and aim to promote foot traffic as an equivalent form of mobility.
The citizens are invited to actively participate in the discussions that form the basis for the upcoming inspections. The first foot traffic check begins on Tuesday, May 20, with a kick-off workshop at the Stresemann School to discuss topics and possible routes. The first two inspections are planned for June 24th and early July, with the focus on the paths around the Stresemann School and the supply center in the Rauschenweg.
Citizen participation and inspections
In the inspections, the focus is on the northern area around the supply center, which includes a bakery, butchery and medical practices. A second inspection is intended to cover the school's way of school as well as the secondary schools and the connection to the train stop. The results of these checks are presented in a final workshop in September, with suggestions for promoting foot traffic based on the weaknesses determined.
The foot traffic checks offer the opportunity to identify the quality and possible defects in foot traffic. According to the Fuss e.V. , various groups-including representatives of the administration, local politics and the police-can take part in these checks. This promotes the versatility of the actors and ensures comprehensive discussions about the challenges and opportunities in the field of foot traffic.
destinations of the foot traffic checks
A central goal of the initiative is to strengthen foot traffic as an environmentally and socially acceptable and health-promoting form of mobility. According to the study "Mobility in Germany", over 80 percent of people aged 14 and over are happy to walk to the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV). The Federal Government has therefore decided on the foot traffic strategy, which aims to strengthen foot traffic as an equivalent part of modern mobility. This strategy gives municipalities important recommendations for action to improve foot traffic.
traffic safety aspects, accessibility and linking to other modes of transport are central issues of strategy. The promotion of foot traffic since 2022 is to increase traffic safety and accidents reduce accidents. The objectives are clear: the quality of life of the citizens is to be increased by more attractive foot traffic offers while promoting climate and environmental protection at the same time.
The foot traffic checks in Kaiserslautern are therefore part of a comprehensive strategy that aims at sustainable promotion and improvement in foot traffic. Citizens are called up to actively participate and raise their voices so that the streets and paths in their city become more secure and accessible.
