Kaiserslautern starts foot traffic check: More security for pedestrians!

In Rhineland-Palatinate, the cities are the focus this year when it comes to improving foot traffic conditions. Meeting point Pfalz reported that the city of Kaiserslautern was selected to take part in the foot traffic check. This decision was announced on March 11, 2025 during the German foot traffic congress in Mainz by Minister Daniela Schmitt. Kaiserslautern is therefore one of ten municipalities that have prevailed from a total of 23 applications.

Participation in this traffic check was celebrated by State Secretary Petra Dick-Walther with the transfer of a certificate to the urban presentation of urban development. Mayor Beate Kimmel sees the foot traffic check as a great opportunity to sustainably improve the framework conditions for pedestrians in the city. The focus is on strengthening foot traffic and taking into account the interests of pedestrians.

Citizen participation is the focus

Citizen participation is a central part of the foot traffic check. In two planned inspections in Kaiserslautern, citizens are actively involved in the assessment of the existing footpaths. In a first workshop, relevant routes and topics are determined, while in the second workshop solutions for identified problems are deepened. These inspections are scheduled for summer 2025.

The specialist office of plannersocietät will support the municipalities in the process, while the costs of the project are borne by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The aim is to make walking in districts with local supply more attractive and to strengthen the local centers. The foot traffic check is not carried out in the city center, but in the district centers, which enables the specific view of the on-site foot traffic conditions.

Mobility plan Climate+ 2030

With regard to the overarching goals of foot traffic, the Mobility Plan Climate+ 2030 also comes into play. According to kaiserslautern.de , there are goals for foot traffic, including improving the walkway width, accessibility and traffic safety. The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety promotes this initiative as part of the local directive.

Kaiserslautern has a high percentage of pedestrians with a foot traffic share of 38.4 percent in domestic traffic. The "Kl Navi" app supports the customizable route planning, especially for people with impairments and plays an important role in the digital accessibility of information for pedestrians.

In summary, it can be said that the foot traffic check in Kaiserslautern is not only a step towards a more attractive urban habitat, but should also serve as an initial spark for future projects in the entire urban area. The citizens' opinion is viewed as a valuable resource to optimize the foot traffic infrastructure and to improve the conditions for all pedestrians.
