Kerosene discounts about Rhineland-Palatinate: security risk or harmless?
over the Palatinate and the Palatinate Forest on April 27, 2025, a kerosene outlet caused excitement when a Boeing 747 the Cargolux had to drain 49 tons of kerosene on the way to Dubai to land safely. Such incidents have become not uncommon in recent years: since 2018 there have been a total of 48 kerosene discounts over Rhineland-Palatinate. The reasons for this drastic measure are mostly technical problems on the aircraft or acute medical emergencies on board, which require early termination of the flight. In Germany, several thousand aircraft fly every day, and not all of them are able to let go of kerosene. This option is limited to long -haul aircraft, which are equipped accordingly for such emergencies.
kerosene, a colorless, liquid hydrocarbon mixture, is used as a fuel in commercial aviation and is drained at least 1,800 meters in an emergency. The indulgence procedure is decided by the cockpit crew and the air traffic controllers play an important role in the selection of a suitable airspace to minimize the environmental impact. In the case of kerosene output, the fuel is atomized in fine droplets in order to enable faster evaporation, which should also reduce health risks.
health and environmental impacts
The health effects of the kerosine depend on the dose. Direct contact can lead to irritation, but the Federal Environment Agency evaluates the effects on human health as uncritical. According to an expert opinion from the UBA, the environmental impact of kerosene cancellations is also to be classified as harmless. Residues that reach the ground have no critical effects on people and nature. This assessment is based on extensive environmental investigations, which show that kerosene discounts do not cause any significant loads for soil, water and air.
In addition, an average of 19 tons of kerosene were drained in 2021 via Rhineland-Palatinate, while in August 2022 89 tons were required due to a technical problem. Rhineland-Palatinate has actively campaigned for a 24-hour message of such kerosine discounts and operates several measuring stations in which no technical abnormalities have so far been found. Most kerosene discounts are near the starting airport to reduce the effects through evaporation and spread.legal and operational recommendations
In May 2019, the Federal Environment Agency published a position paper on the effects of fuel rapids, which was subsequently updated. This new evaluation does not change the fundamental assessment of the harmlessness of kerosene discounts. As part of a research project, four hypothetical worst-case scenarios were examined in order to evaluate the potential for impairing air quality, soil, groundwater and health. The results flowed into recommendations for action, which suggest, among other things, the increase in the minimum flight height for kerosene discounts to reduce the load on the soil.
The coalition agreement of the new federal government already provides relief for kerosene discounts. These measures are intended to help you inform the public about the security of kerosene discounts and to address possible health and environmental protection concerns.
