Motor craft Rhineland-Palatinate: Employees demand fair wages!

The collective bargaining in the Rhineland-Palatinate car craft faces significant changes. IG Metall has requested an increase in fees by 6.5 percent and 170 euros more for trainees. The request was created as part of a collective bargaining commission, which evaluated the results of a survey on February 11, 2025 and decided to terminate the current payment tariff contracts. The motto of the employees, "turn up a gear", illustrates the desire for fair wages and an improvement in working conditions.

Around 300 employees from the Koblenz region attest to the urgent need for fair wages and an increase in training allowances in a tariff survey. The current workload is closely bound to the tense skilled workers in the car dealerships, which in many cases leads to long waiting times for customers. Employers are required to counter the price increases through appropriate wage increases and to make the industry more attractive for new specialists.

collective agreements and negotiating horizon

The previous tariff framework for the vehicle trade was terminated by employers in 2020. At the beginning of 2024, it was partially restored by negotiations with a collective bargaining community of car dealerships and workshops. The current collective agreement expires on March 31, 2025, which signals an urgent need for action for the upcoming negotiations. The first talks are scheduled for early April 2025.

These upcoming negotiations are particularly important because the industry has been under considerable pressure in recent years. The success of the warning strikes in the car craft can be a concise expression of these efforts. A tariff degree was obtained, which guarantees the employees in 2023 and 2024 a total of 8.6 percent more salary in two stages. This includes a 5 percent increase from November 2023 and another 3.6 percent increase from October 2024.

additional services for trainees

A central concern of the current tariff discussions is also to improve the situation for trainees. In the Hessian vehicle trade, the training allowances increase around 70 euros per year from November 2023 and around 50 euros from October 2024. In addition, the trainees benefit from tax-free inflation compensation premiums. These premiums are designed for a total of 1,250 euros and should be an incentive for future specialists.

In addition, trainees have the perspective of a takeover by the end of 2027 after successful examination, which increases the attractiveness of training in car craft. The possibility of investing parts of the fee in tax-friendly leasing contracts for bicycles or e-bikes complements the offer for employees and promotes environmentally friendly mobility.

Overall, the upcoming negotiations and the previous successes in the tariff discussions show that the employees and IG Metall are willing to fight for fairer working conditions. The industry is at a turning point that could be crucial for how it will develop in the coming years. It remains to be seen how the employers will react to the claims that result from the desire for increase in fees and for improved training conditions.
