The legal foundations regarding tuning are complex and require precise compliance. According to Autorechonline.de , the installation of performance-enhancing chips, also known as chip tuning, can change the exhaust gas behavior of a vehicle. In such cases, the operating license expires if the modification is not immediately accepted by an officially recognized expert. The corresponding confirmations and reports are essential to avoid legal consequences.

regulations for tuning

The traffic law provisions demand that technical modifications on vehicles are carried out by qualified specialists. Only changes that are decreased by official examination organizations such as TÜV, DEKRA or KÜS are permitted. Vehicles that do not meet the requirements of the road traffic registration regulations can be towed and shut down by the authorities.

Serious violations that can result in the expiry of the operating license ranges from changes to rims and spoilers to improper selection of tires and rims. Vehicle owners are urgently advised to make modifications on the German market with a partial report or general operating license (ABE) to ensure that their vehicles meet the legal requirements.
