Schluster's water supply: new plans and technologies for the future!

The Stadtwerke Schluechtern continuously implement measures to ensure drinking water supply. In view of the challenges through aging supply lines and systems, a new elevated tank for the Vollwei district is currently being planned. The responsible work intensively on calculations on the required amount of water and the amount of extinguishing water for emergencies.

In order to further improve drinking water quality, new UV filters were installed in the drinking water systems in Wallroth and Drasenberg. Remaining work on the tax system and programming work are still necessary before the systems can be put into operation. After that, three measurements are planned in coordination with the district health office to check the effectiveness of the UV disinfection.

Efficient disinfection and improvement of the infrastructure

The UV disinfection, which inactivates microorganisms by UVC light, offers a promising method to improve water treatment. If the new technology works successfully, chlorination in the region can be set. It is noteworthy that no more chlorination is required in Breitenbach, since the drinking water quality has been successfully optimized there.

In other districts, around half a dozen UV filters are being planned. In addition, the Hinkelhof elevator is being renovated, in which a UV system is also installed. These initiatives are part of a more comprehensive strategy to improve drinking water supply.

new wastewater guidelines and regulations

In parallel to the measures in the drinking water area, the city of Schluechtern is preparing for the new municipal wastewater guideline "Karl". This EU regulation provides for a fourth cleaning level for municipal wastewater that aims to further improve environmental protection and human health through stricter norms. In particular, the focus is on monitoring chemical pollutants, pathogens and antimicrobial resistance.

The last changes in the cleaning levels in the EU took place in 2000. World Water Day on March 22nd reminds us of the urgency and importance of these topics.

In a further step, the digital Karl consultation hour will be started on February 5, 2025, which is free of charge for all members of the German Association for Water Management, Wastewater and Waste (DWA). These consultation hours take place every first Wednesday of the month and serve to answer specific inquiries and clarify uncertainties from the participants.

The Schluechtern measures for water treatment and the adjustments to the sewage guideline are not only important steps for local infrastructure, but also for the protection of the environment and health of the citizens. The focus on sustainable solutions is becoming increasingly important today.
