Verdi warning strike in Hamm: Citizens' offices and garbage collection affected!
On Wednesday, March 11, 2025, the warning strike of the Verdi union in Hamm reached a decisive point. In a comprehensive mobilization, Verdi, together with the Komba union, calls on workers from all areas of the public service. The city administration has already taken precautions to manage the effects of this strike. While the citizens' offices in Hamm, such as in Hamm-Mitte, Uentrop and Herringen, go into emergency operation, regular processing in other districts such as Rhynern, Pelkum, Bockum-Hövel and Heessen is severely restricted.
The Sparkasse will only open three of its branches on this day (marketplace, Maxi-Center, Hohenhöveler Straße). However, ATMs and self -service terminals remain available. It also becomes uncomfortable for road users: all buses of the municipal utilities remain in the depot until Friday, and only the buses of the Breitenbach traffic company will continue to drive.
consequences for the citizens
In addition, the strike does not leave the regulatory office and the waste management and city cleaning company unaffected. Restrictions on the garbage disposal are inevitable, after all, the recycling materials and paper remain unaffected this week. While the residual and biom waste tours were mostly carried out, there was no removal for bio-value materials on Monday. Residents are encouraged to put excess garbage next to the ton to the next regular collection.
Verdi is determined and warns of permanent strikes, should fail the current negotiations that take place in Potsdam from March 14th to 17th. Trade unionists want to send a clear signal to employers who have not yet submitted a offer in the previous negotiating rounds.
warning strikes in the public service
The current warning strikes are part of a larger movement within the public service, which already led to significant failures on Monday. A total of 3,500 flight cancellations were registered, which resulted in around 560,000 affected passengers. Among other things, this affects 13 German airports such as Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin. Union chief Frank Werneke expressed his maximum anger on the lack of offers from employers and emphasized the urgency of improvements in wages and working conditions.
Verdi calls for a salary increase of 8 percent or at least 350 euros more as well as three additional free days in the ongoing collective bargaining for the public service. Employers have not yet made a specific offer in this regard.
The collective bargaining for the public service is very relevant because they affect around 2.3 million employees at the federal and municipalities, while the existing collective agreement ends on December 31, 2024. The third round of negotiations takes place from March 14th to 16th, and the unions are actively committed to comprehensive improvements to the salary and working conditions. This strike is evident in the context of a higher lack of personnel in the public service, where many employees suffer from overload and vacant positions.
The next few days will be crucial for the mobilization of the employees and for employers who face growing pressure. Citizens in Hamm and beyond the city limits have to adapt to possible further disruptions in the public service, while the talks between the unions and the employers continue.
