Bridge Brunsbecke in Hagen: Refurbishment or closure threatens!

The Talbrücke Brunsbecke on the A45 near Hagen faces a critical situation due to its age and serious structural defects. With a length of 534 meters, it is one of the most important bridges in North Rhine-Westphalia and was built in the 1970s. Their condition is so serious that it is one of the 2,000 bridges in North Rhine-Westphalia, which are classified as worrying in the "bridge monitor" of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. NRW Transport Minister Oliver Krischer openly granted the problems and explained that the new building of this bridge was originally planned for 2019, but had to be re-awarded due to delays.

Currently the start of construction for replacement construction is postponed to 2026, which could further tighten the already tense traffic situation on the A45. So far, the bridge has been maintained by reinforcing measures, a assembly duct monitored it permanently in order to identify changes at an early stage. A sudden failure of the bridge could have drastic consequences: a full closure of the A45 would redirect the traffic via the B54 into the Volmetal and result in significant stress for residents and the goods traffic.

Comparison with sister bridge Rahmede

The Brunsbecke Bridge is identical with the Talbrücke Rahmede near Lüdenscheid, which was blocked in December 2021 due to massive damage, which was blown up in May 2023. This raises questions because both bridges have the same state classification of 3.0 (not sufficient). While the Rahmede bridge was planned for a new building between 2012 and 2014, the plans were implemented faster due to the poor condition, and the approval was already granted in 2018.

In contrast, the Kallenbach Tal Bridge in Hesse received a multi-million dollar support corset for bridging the time until the new building, which is also intended for 2026. However, the authorities became active in relation to the Brunsbecke, so that a planning approval procedure was superfluous. This authorization to approved Autobahn GmbH in 2021 is unusual for North Rhine-Westphalia and could explain the reasons for the lengthy process of the Brunsbecke Bridge.

renovation offensive for street infrastructure

In order to counter the dilapidated state of many bridges, the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia has launched the renovation offensive "Street Infrastructure NRW". The aim is to significantly reduce the proportion of transport infrastructure in need of renovation within the next ten years. This includes the renovation and new construction of a total of 400 bridges.

Transport Minister Oliver Krischer emphasizes the need for a powerful infrastructure for citizens and companies. Innovative quick construction methods should help save time when planning and implementation. A pilot project, the Wupperbrücke Blombacher Bach, is intended to serve as an example of an effective implementation. Here the construction period is about six months, while conventional procedures often take one to one and a half years.

A total of 51 bridge construction measures with a total volume of 160 million euros are planned for 2025 in North Rhine-Westphalia. There are also 220 million euros for the renovation of streets and other infrastructure components. It is particularly emphasized that these measures not only serve to increase traffic safety, but also to improve the quality of life of the residents.
