Feller Valley Bridge: Massive renovation on the A1 begins in spring!

The Autobahn GmbH of the West, Western branch, announced on January 13, 2025 that the repair work on the Feller Valley Bridge on the A1 continues on schedule. The construction work on the bridge, which extends between the Moselltal Moselltal motorway triangle and the Mehring junction, began in March 2024. This extensive construction project is expected to be completed by the beginning of 2027 and includes significant modernizations.

With a length of 830 meters, the Feller Valley Bridge is extensively renewed. The planned work includes the renovation of the road surface, the bridge seal and the building caps as well as the renewal of the protective devices and the road crossings. The drainage facilities are also modernized. The first construction phase for the road towards Cologne and Koblenz was already completed last year.

Current construction sections and traffic redirection

The second construction phase begins in spring 2025 with the work on the road towards Saarbrücken, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. Previously, preparatory work on construction site traffic will take place from January 13th to 26th. From January 27, traffic will temporarily be redirected to the renovated road towards Cologne and Koblenz, whereby two lanes towards Saarbrücken and a lane towards Cologne and Koblenz are available. In the construction site area, a speed limit of 80 km/h applies, even only 60 km/h.

In the context of comprehensive infrastructure measures in the region, Autobahn GmbH West invests around 395 million euros in a total of 125 projects in 2023. These projects not only affect the Feller Valley Bridge, but also numerous other buildings in Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse. The modernization efforts include a total volume of around 4,000 bridges that are to be repaired or modernized in the next ten years.

bridge modernization in Germany

Germany has around 40,100 bridges in the federal long -distance road network, of which around 28,000 sub -structures are integrated in the network of federal highways. The condition of the motorway bridges is considered safe, but intensive stresses from heavy traffic show their traces. A priority bridge moderation network has set itself the task of repairing or modernizing around 8,000 motorway bridges.

In view of the increasing investment needs, the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport is planning to increase the maintenance investments. These are expected to increase from 4.6 billion euros to 5.0 billion euros by 2025. Annual maintenance investments of around 2.1 billion euros from 2023 are planned to support the structural measures comprehensively. Wochenspiegel reports on the expected progress and challenges in this important infrastructure project.

Overall, it turns out that the progress on the Feller Valley Bridge is part of a larger plan to ensure and modernize the transport infrastructure in Germany sustainably. The investments and construction projects could be crucial for the mobility and safety of drivers on the highways. rpr 1 emphasizes that the bridges in the 1960s and 1970s often have to be brought into the focus of the modernization.

The challenges of the present and the future in the infrastructure should be mastered by this comprehensive approach, which is of crucial importance for the economy and traffic safety in the region.
