Museums in plural society: an exchange for the future!

The city of Münster will be the scene of the largest museum conference in Germany in May 2026. During the annual conference of the German Museum Association, which takes place from May 10th to 13th, over 900 museum specialists from home and abroad are expected. The central theme of the conference is "museums in plural society". A space for the exchange is created to discuss how museums can build bridges in a diverse society and initiate valuable conversations, so reports Antenne Münster . The conference is organized at the Messe and Congress Center Halle Münsterland. In addition to specialist lectures and discussions, excursions as well as evening receptions in the LWL museums for art and culture as well as natural history are also on the program. In addition, further events are planned in the town hall, the city museum and in other museums in the city. The cultural director Barbara Rüschoff-Parzinger emphasizes the need to actively address socio-political issues and the problems of marginalized groups, especially with regard to the political pressure, which is exerted on museums on the right.

technical discussion focus

The conference is devoted to a variety of focus on discussion that aims to promote equal discourse and tolerance in museums. This includes the representation of plural society as well as possible limits of this tolerance. The annual conference will serve as a platform to provide strategic impulses and practical tools for museum work. The aim is to recognize and strengthen museums as active actors in social change, reports

new guidelines for diversity and migration

In this context, the Deutsche Museumsbund e.V. initiated the work on a new guide entitled "Museums, Migration and Cultural Diversity". This guide is specifically designed to react to the challenges associated with diversity, migration and dealing with racism in museums. With the focus on the experiences of city and regional museums in working with refugees and migrated people, the guide is intended to develop new perspectives and strategies, to reduce restructuring racism and to integrate various voices in exhibitions and educational offers, such as Museumsbund reported.

The first version of the guideline was published in 2015 and focused on intercultural opening and the cultural participation in the museum. The incoming revision aims to address new questions and challenges and to further raise awareness of the importance of diversity in museum work. With these measures it becomes clear that museums have a significant potential to take up social issues and actively participate in their solution.
