Radroute on the Dortmund-Ems Canal: The plan for 30 kilometers of bike pleasure!
The expansion of the bike route along the Dortmund-Ems Canal was officially announced. On February 12, 2025, the announcement was made that funding from Berlin was approved. This new bicycle traffic connection between Münster and the Ruhr area should create an important connection for cyclists and is part of a larger project that connects the region.
The municipalities, Dülmen, Lüdinghausen, Olfen and the district of Coesfeld are involved in the project. The planning is based on the already implemented "channel promenade" in Münster. A meeting of the representatives took place on February 6, 2025 at the Kanalplatz in Senden to inform about the next steps.Details of the Radroute
The planned cycling route will extend over a distance of around 30 kilometers. The construction work includes an asphalt ceiling and a continuous expansion width of at least three meters. It is noteworthy that 90% of the sections that run on operating channels are financed by the federal government. However, the financial resources are limited; The original total costs of 4,766,970 euros are expected to be sufficient. The municipalities must therefore also raise their own funds. The municipal own shares are listed here:

The planning for the route expansion begins in 2025. The construction of the first section in Senden is scheduled to start in 2026, and the entire route is expected to be completed by 2028. In Senden, 86,429 cyclists were already counted at a measuring point, which underlines the enormous interest and the need for such a route.
The Dortmund-Ems Canal Route
The cycling route is part of a larger network of cycling options that arise along the entire Dortmund-Ems Canal. This route of about 350 kilometers leads from Dortmund to the North Sea and crosses the picturesque Münsterland. The route combines idyllic villages, nature experiences and urban areas and offers numerous sights for cyclists. These include Senden, the Venner Moor, the port of Münster and the Rieselfelder.
The variety of landscapes along the route makes it attractive for both hobby and recreational cyclists as well as for sporty motivated cyclists. The route contains historical locks, boatmen, bridges and ports that enrich the driving experience. In addition to these attractions, numerous accommodations and gastronomic companies are also available that ensure a pleasant time to visitors.
In summary, it can be said that the expansion of the bike route along the Dortmund-Ems Canal will be both an infrastructural improvement and strengthening regional tourism. While the preparations for the project have already started, it is hoped that the implementation will take place efficiently and in the planned time frame.Details | |
