Saarland's highways shine: over 60 percent in top condition!

In the current report on the street infrastructure, it can be seen that the Saarland does well compared to other area countries in Germany with regard to the quality of its highways. According to the Saarbrücker Zeitung are 63 percent of the long-distance streets in Saarland in good or very good condition, based on data from the Federal Ministry of Transport. This places the Saarland at the top among the 13 area countries in Germany.

The analysis also includes that 16 percent of the motorway routes are classified as bad or very poor, while 11 percent of the routes have medium quality. There is no evaluation for 10 percent of the routes. In comparison, Thuringia and Schleswig-Holstein follow with 62 percent of the routes in good or very good condition.

Structural data of the road network

In Germany, the entire road network is over 830,000 kilometers, as noted on the website of Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure . The local traffic includes 229,556 kilometers, while the federal highways cover 50,982 kilometers. The state and state roads as well as district roads are also listed, which come up with 86,751 kilometers and 91,823 kilometers.

  • bridges in the federal long -distance road network:
    • Total: 39,818

financing and investment needs

The federal government has recently responded to the challenges in the transport infrastructure. While in 2005 two thirds of the investments in federal long -distance streets were used for new buildings, it is only a third in 2023. The Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2016-2030 emphasizes the need for maintenance. 13 billion euros are planned for the upgrading of bridges within the federal road network.

For rail transport, the performance and financing agreement III has increased payments to Deutsche Bahn AG, which includes a total of 51 billion euros for the renovation and maintenance of the rail network from 2020 to 2029.

In the coming year 2024, 10.8 billion euros will be provided for the preservation, which is a increase of a third compared to the previous year. Although these measures are necessary, a current study by the German Institute for Urban Studies shows that the investment deficit in cities has increased from 25 to 48 billion euros.

In summary, it can be said that the transport infrastructure, especially in terms of highways and bridges, requires increasing attention in Germany. Despite the positive developments in Saarland, there is a significant need for investment to maintain and improve the quality of the transport infrastructure.
