New Year's Eve in Frankfurt: Despite banned, the celebration mood escalates!
in Frankfurt and the surrounding region celebrated several thousand people into the new year at the turn of the year. The Frankfurt Main bank and the bridges with a view to the fireworks were particularly popular. An hour before midnight, however, there was a blocking of the iron bridge and the Holbeinsteg to regulate crowds of people. Overall, the city counted less celebrations in the city center compared to the previous year.
Despite a ban on fireworks that applied to the Zeil, main guard and constant guard, firecrackers and rockets were ignited in these places before midnight. The police were used with a strong contingent to control pyrotechnics and prevent incidents. There were several arrests, including two people with shot guns. In addition, further arrests had to be recorded because rockets were ignited in the prohibition zones, some of them in the direction of passers -by and emergency services.
regulations and security measures on New Year's Eve
The city of Frankfurt had given numerous bans on New Year's Eve to regulate the celebrations. From December 31, 9 p.m., until January 1, 2024, 3 a.m., an order from the Federal Police came into force that prohibited weapons and dangerous objects in several train stations. The main train station, Höchst, Süd, Taunus facility, main guard and constable guard were affected. Firearms, cocks and stab weapons as well as weapons were banned, while fireworks were carried, but were not allowed to be burned.
The city also warned of traffic disabilities due to closures north and south of the Main. The burning of fireworks was also prohibited in other urban areas due to increased risk of fire, especially near churches, hospitals and care facilities, where a distance of at least 200 meters had to be observed. In the area of the Frankfurt Zoo, the ignition of firecrackers and rockets was also prohibited; A separate fire guard was set up for New Year's Eve and the city police monitored compliance with the regulations.
The federal police expected an increase in crimes at the turn of the year and expected high number of visitors in the train stations. During New Year's Eve 2023, over 300 people were checked, 30 references were pronounced and several investigative proceedings were initiated. Despite the existing ban on weapons, three weapons of shot, a whipping ring and a knife were ensured, which indicates the security measures mentioned.
