South Westphalia: This is how the street infrastructure should finally be renovated!

On April 11, 2025, Viktor Haase, State Secretary presented in the Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport NRW, and Dr. Petra Beckefeld, Technical Director of Straße.nrw, in the Sihk Hagen the progress of the special program "Street infrastructure South Westphalia". The region is affected by a massive traffic load, with over 470 kilometers of particularly burdened federal and state roads. The blocking of the A45 has far -reaching consequences, which are reflected in increasing transport costs, delayed supply chains and difficulties when looking for skilled workers. This program pursues the goal of sustainably improving the infrastructural conditions in this region.

dr. Ralf Greuschkat, General Manager of the SIHK, emphasized the urgency during the presentation to speed up the package of measures and optimize the construction site coordination. He emphasized that the time had come for open and transparent communication of the measures. Regular updates on digital platforms should strengthen the participation and trust of citizens. Gerschkat also calls for a more intensive integration of the municipalities at the TIC-Kommunal portal, which is provided by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The special program should establish South Westphalia as a model region for effective construction site coordination.

background and goal of the special program

The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia has continued the renovation offensive "Street Infrastructure North Rhine-Westphalia" with the special program for South Westphalia. The start took place on September 6, 2024 in Hagen. There, Transport Minister Oliver Krischer presented a comprehensive package of measures that revolve around 470 kilometers of federal and state roads, which are heavily burdened by motorway traffic and in particular the blocked A45. The current measures are not only urgent, but also of crucial importance for the people and companies on site.

dr. Petra Beckefeld announced various measures on the alternative routes of the locked A45. The focus should be on conservation measures, conversion and expansion as well as new construction of roads and cycle paths. A transparent procedure for prioritizing the construction work was promised to make the challenges of the street infrastructure future -proof. The past few years have already shown progress in the stabilization of the road state, but there is considerable need for action.

long -term plans and measures

In November 2023, the state government presented an extensive renovation offensive, which includes the replacement of around 400 bridges within a decade. To date, three replacement construction measures have already been completed, and 34 bridges are either under construction or commissioned. In addition, a total of 75 kilometers of state roads and 62 kilometers of federal highways have been renovated since November 2023. These steps are part of a long-term plan that was developed as part of the integrated overall traffic planning (IGVP). Target = "_ blank"> Brd.nrw .

The creation of a coordinated “special program of street infrastructure South Westphalia” underlines the importance of cooperation between the country, municipalities and other institutions. Such a collective can quickly achieve positive results through good communication and coordinated action. This is crucial to support both the regional economy and to facilitate the everyday life of the residents.
