Severe weather warning on Easter: Thunderstorms and heavy rain threaten in Hesse!

On Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, the German Weather Service (DWD) warns of severe thunderstorms in Hesse. This warning applies until 8:30 p.m. and affects several cities and counties, including the city of Frankfurt, the city and the district of Offenbach as well as the Main-Kinzig-Kreis, the Wetteraukreis and the Hochtaunuskreis. In Central Hesse, however, the thunderstorm warnings were not extended over 5:30 p.m., while in northern Hesse's strong thunderstorms are expected over and around Kassel. The storm front moves from North Rhine-Westphalia to the east and brings strong rainfall in the affected regions.

The districts of Marburg-Biedenkopf, Lahn-Dill, Vogelsberg, Fulda and Gießen are particularly affected in Central and East Hesse. The DWD reports that the first foothills of the low already bring wind -prone air masses to the south of Hesse. The temperatures reach between 19 and 22 degrees, in higher altitudes up to 17 degrees are possible. The wind mostly blows weak, but changes to the southwest in the afternoon in the south and can lead to strong gusts locally.

severe weather warnings and expected precipitation

The DWD announces thunderstorms and heavy rain for Easter Sunday, whereby up to 30 liters per square meter can fall in a short time in some regions. Heavy rain of 15 to 25 liters per square meter within an hour is expected for the middle of Germany, which creates alarming conditions. In areas with pounding thunderstorms, up to 35 liters per square meter are possible over several hours, which has to be classified as a storm.

In addition, in southern Germany, especially in Bavaria, hail and gusts of wind at speeds up to 85 km/h cannot be ruled out. On the following Easter Monday, striking thunderstorms, heavy rain and stormy gusts are also expected in parts of Germany. The sky will be cloudy, with maximum temperatures between 16 and 21 degrees. In some regions, especially on the coast, the temperatures are only 12 degrees.

security measures and behavior in the event of thunderstorms

The DWD provides important information for dealing with thunderstorms. With an approaching thunderstorm, people should be in safe, solid buildings or vehicles. It is also recommended to separate electrical devices from the power grid and to search for protection in nature, for example in lowering or under bridges. The distance to other people and metal objects should be at least one meter, and high -standing trees and masts should be avoided. The situation in the water is particularly dangerous: the stay in water during a thunderstorm should be avoided strictly.

If less than 30 seconds pass between lightning and thunder, the thunderstorm is in the immediate vicinity, and protection should be sought immediately. The danger remains 30 minutes after the last flash and thunderstorm.

Current information about the weather situation is of course still provided by the DWD, which offers a dynamic weather map for real -time monitoring of storms. The next update will take place on Monday, April 21, 2025, at 5:00 a.m. to inform the citizens about further development.
