Regensburg modernizes traffic management: safer, smarter, more environmentally friendly!
The city of Regensburg has taken a significant step towards independent and environmentally friendly mobility with the modernization of its traffic management system. As reported municipality21 , the project was launched in 2020 and includes an entire investment volume of 2.1 million euros, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport. The core of this modernization is the renewed central traffic calculator, which is now able to efficiently control the 197 traffic light systems in the urban area.
The new traffic management system is characterized by its flexibility. It can react to short-term changes in traffic and uses modern interface formats that enable a connection to the 5G mobile radio network. A special innovation is storage space management, which is intended to avoid overstating of high -frequency nodes. Furthermore, 24 traffic light systems were technically brought up to date.
technological innovations
Another innovative component of modernization are the Road-side units (RSU), which enable more precisely recording speeds and backstreams. The prioritized registration of emergency vehicles and buses at traffic lights becomes more precise due to this technology, which guarantees a faster passage for the emergency services. The RSU approach is implemented as part of the city administration's smart city project, with a test system in the Franz-Josef-Strauß-Allee planned for the fourth quarter of 2025.
In addition, six new environmental sensors were installed, which measure relevant air parameters at selected locations. In this way, real -time data for air pollutants and emissions are collected. A new online quality management system is also in operation, which records current traffic data with 108 installed sensors and monitored the quality of public transport prioritization and the traffic light coordination, such as the so-called "green wave".
long -term goals and advantages
The overarching goal of these measures is to make traffic in the urban area safe, fluid and environmentally friendly in the long term. The proposed changes should make it possible to quickly recognize and fix disorders or deviations so that all road users can benefit from it. Regensburg thus sets a sign of modern traffic planning and sustainable infrastructure.
