The funding program is specifically geared towards the installation of public drinking water running fountains, which are equipped with DVGW-enclosed or comparably certified components. Simple drinking water taps at existing water pipes are not eligible. The website of the ministry provides the municipalities information about the application and access to the electronic support procedure MIP funding.
The application includes estimated costs and a detailed description of the wells and their locations. In order to increase the visibility of the program, it is mandatory that the wells are provided with a reference to the funding benefit agent, here the Ministry of Climate Protection.

In addition, the Federal Environment Ministry plans to set up a public drinking fountain for each of the 51 games of the upcoming European Football Championship in Germany. Another goal is to enable access to free drinking water to heavily frequented places such as parks or pedestrian zones.The Federal Government not only pursues the goal of promoting public health in terms of heat protection, but also supporting environmentally friendly approaches. Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke emphasizes that the increasing extreme weather events make these efforts necessary. Cities and municipalities are called to plan and set up new drinking water fountains in order to meet the needs of citizens.
In total, there are already over 1,300 public drinking water fountains in Germany, and in a first step around 1,000 additional wells are to be installed. These measures are part of a comprehensive plan to improve public water supply and to implement the UN goals for sustainable development, in particular goal 6, which would like to ensure access to perfect drinking water.
