Society of society: artist brings colors to Landau!
The Offenbach artist Elke Pfaffmann has created an impressive work in front of the district administration in Landau with her latest art installation "Pillars of Society". The installation, which consists of four 2.90 meter high stainless steel columns in bright colors, was set up at the service building at Arzheimer Strasse 1. Each of the colorful columns represents one of the four departments of the administration: social affairs, veterinary, agriculture and viticulture. District Administrator Dietmar Seefeldt describes the columns as a playful contrast to the architecture of the administrative building and as a visual marking of the main entrance.
Pfaffmann emphasizes the content of her art. Through strong main colors and striking graphic cuffs, it gives character and dynamics to the appearances of the pillars. The project was realized as part of renovation work on the building, using part of the funding from the State of Rhineland-Palatinate. According to the state specifications, the district made 20,000 euros available.
art in building as a cultural enrichment
art in building plays an important role in the cultural development of buildings. It should not only give the building an unmistakable character, but also offer aesthetic incentives. The motivation to decorate buildings with art is crucial for the success of such projects. Art in construction also requires close cooperation between architects and owners to combine the functions of the building with an artistic aspects. This is supported by the principles of working in the canton of Basel-Stadt, where a cantonal funding institution for art was launched in 1919 to support artists in economically difficult times.
Over the years, however, the focus of this institution has changed. Nowadays, the focus is no longer the focus, but the artistic quality and the mediating message. Projects that have a credible history and a connection to the environment stand out in competitions and are widely received. The boulder is considered an example in the new foyer of the St. Jakobshalle, which was considered throughout Switzerland.
A particularly versatile material that is often used in construction is wood. It is used in many forms, be it picture frames, statues or interior design. Wood changes through external influences and develops together with the building and its residents. The goal is the combination of art and functionality, which shows, for example, in the details of stairs or in the benches from different types of wood.
The installation of Elke Pfaffmann in Landau impressively shows how art not only create a visual added value, but can also address deeper social issues. Your work is part of a discourse on society as a whole, which is shaped by the combination of art and building culture. This approach encourages to promote the identity of buildings through attentive artistic design and to give them a narrative function
