Traffic accidents 2024: decline in dead, worries about young drivers!

On April 23, 2025, the Wörth am Rhein police inspection published the traffic accident balance for 2024. This shows pleasing developments, in particular a decline in the total number of traffic accidents to 2063. This means that the accidents are lower than in the previous year. A particularly positive aspect is that there were no fatal traffic accidents in 2024.

The balance sheet also documents the decline of seriously injured people by 27.45 percent to a total of 37. In the area of accidents with children, a decrease of 50 percent was recorded by just 13 accidents. Contrary to this, the traffic accidents with personal damage rose by 4.94 percent to 255. The increase in accidents caused by young drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 is particularly worrying; There was an increase of 6.53 percent to 375 accidents here.

focus on young drivers

The increase in accidents with young drivers turns out to be part of a wider trend. An analysis of ADAC accident research shows that 18 to 24 year olds are more often involved in traffic accidents. This age group causes more accidents than older road users and accidentally accidents. The main causes of these accidents are alcoholized trips, youthful high spirits and a lack of experience. The analysis extended over 18,000 data records and covered driving errors that often occur in young drivers, such as unintentional lane changes and agreements from the street.

An important problem remains the non -observance of security precautions. The accidents of this age group often include sole accidents that occur in 29 percent of cases, while this quota is only 18 percent in older drivers. Away from the main roads, i.e. on land and federal roads, 76 percent of these accidents occur. The inadequate use of seat belts, which is 5.2 percent higher for young drivers than for all car drivers with 4 percent, further exacerbates the risks of injury.

security measures and preventive approaches

In order to counter the increasing number of accidents of young drivers, the Wörth police are carried out by increased traffic surveillance and targeted traffic controls. The focus here is on prevention measures, where the police emphasize the need for continuous work on traffic safety. The “Accompanied driving from 17” program has proven itself as a successful model because it significantly reduces the accident rate in the first years after acquisition of driving license. Young people who participate in this program are more rare in traffic accidents in the first year, which indicates the importance of practical experience and realistic risk assessments.

In addition, a possible “accompanied driving from 16” is also discussed in order to prepare even younger beginners for the challenges of road traffic. The German Road Safety Council (DVR) demands more sensitization and measures to raise awareness of safe mobility among young people. In 2023, 272 young people died in this age group in road traffic, which corresponds to almost 10 percent of all traffic fats.

The traffic accident balance 2024 and the associated trends illustrate the importance of education, prevention and effective traffic monitoring measures. The police and traffic safety organizations continue to work to increase security on the streets, especially for the endangered young drivers.
