Nostalgic steam trains start in the Elmsteiner valley in May!
On May 1, 2025, the nostalgic steam train ride of the Kuckuckebähnel from Neustadt (Weinstra) Hbf to the picturesque Elmsteiner valley begins. The train that has been driving since 1984 connects romantic hiking destinations with the fascination of historical locomotives. The steam locomotive 378.78, which was built in 1927, pulls wagons of the wood class from around 1900. These trains are managed and offer space for bicycles and prams.
The total driving time up to Elmstein is an hour and 15 minutes and leads over the main route Mannheim-Saarbrücken of DB-Netz AG, with a stop in Lambrecht before continuing to the museum route. The journey through the forested Elmsteiner valley along the Speyerbach is a real joy for nature lovers and offers numerous opportunities for hiking and mountain biking. Return is around 5 p.m.
Special trips in May and June
Special events are also planned. On May 29, 2025, on Ascension Day, a special train drives with a historic diesel locomotive V 100 and platform car via Bad Münster am Stein to Bingen. Here the participants have four hours to explore the city or visit the neighboring state garden show area. Panoramic drives in convertible classmaker buses that lead from Bad Münster am Stein to Bingen and from Bingen along the Rhine to the Loreley, complement this experience.Another highlight is the special train that drives on June 9th, Monthly Monday, from Neustadt to Annweiler. In Annweiler there is the possibility of tours through the old town, the spa park and hikes to Trifels Castle. The afternoon provides for a pendulum connection from Annweiler to Landau.

A booking including a space reservation is required for all special trips, which is available on the website of Eisenbahnmuseum Neustadt . The high season for these nostalgic trips usually extends from May to October, whereby the trains run every 14 days on Sundays, even weekly in August and September.
The cuckoo bahn railway not only offers unique trips, but also the chance of climbing into the cab of the locomotive-a special experience that can be booked at an additional charge. The connection between history and nature makes these experiences an unforgettable part of the Palatinate railway history. The cuckoo is one of the attractions that should not be missed.
