Verona meets Bingen: Together for Buga 2029 strong!

On January 15, 2025, Vittorino Beifiori, former partnership officer of the province of Verona, met with Mayor Thomas Feser at Klopp Castle in Bingen. At this meeting, Beifiori brought the greetings from Verona, Damiano Tommasi, who has been in office since June 29, 2022. Tommasi, a former Italian football professional, shows great interest in the Federal Garden Show (Buga) 2029 in Bingen to explore possible cooperation and the exchange of cultural ideas.

Beifiori and Feser discussed possibilities of how Verona can be actively involved in the Buga. Mayor Feser was open to cooperation and a fertile exchange between the two cities. This initiative could help consolidate the connection between Verona and Bingen.

Verona and Hangzhou: A cultural exchange

The delegation was accompanied by Mario Turetta, General Secretary, and Maria Assunta Peci, the representative for international relations between the Italian Ministry of Culture. As part of the meeting, concrete steps for common cultural and commercial support were initiated. The focus was on the formation of working groups to strengthen the national and artistic heritage of both cities and to develop trade agreements.

cultural interdependencies

Interestingly, Verona and Hangzhou are connected by famous love stories: the tragic romance of Romeo and Julia in Verona and the legend of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, known as the "butterfly -loving" in Hangzhou. These cultural parallels underline the importance of both cities in the global narrative of love and loss.

Verona, with around 260,000 inhabitants, is not only known for their romantic history, but also for their numerous sights. The city is located on an important traffic axis that has become a traffic junction through the burner highway. In 2000, Verona was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is home to one of the best preserved antique buildings, the Arena of Verona, which has served as an event location for renowned opera festival since 1913.

In addition, Verona is perceived as an important economic region, especially as the main handling area for agricultural products of the PO plain. The city houses numerous industrial companies, especially in the furniture industry, and is known for the breakdown of Veroneser Marble. With these facets, Verona not only contributes to the culture, but also to the economy of the region.

The efforts to continue to involve Verona in international cultural networks are important for both the city and for its twin city of Bingen. Developments in the context of Buga 2029 and the existing partnership with Hangzhou show how important intercultural relationships are in a globalized world.
