Nieder-Olm and Ingelheim rely on creative accommodations for refugees!

In view of the increasing number of refugees, the Mainz-Bingen district sees itself in the obligation to create additional accommodation options. At the moment, the available capacity is not sufficient to accommodate all the needy. The Kreuzhof in Nieder-Olm and the former hospital in Ingelheim are already used. These accommodations should be expanded as soon as possible. Citizens are called to provide available objects or areas in order to relieve the acute emergency. Notes or offers can be sent to integration@mainz-bingen.de

The persistent challenges in refugee accommodation are also influenced by legal regulations. In order to meet the need, the Refugee Subjecting Measure Act has introduced significant changes in the Building Code (BauGB). These changes are aimed at extending the facilitates for the creation of refugee accommodation by the end of 2024. The possibility to extend the deadlines for mobile accommodations is also considered, so that these could apply by December 31, 2027.

legal bases and structural relief

The legal adjustments that took place for the first time on November 26, 2014 and later on October 24, 2015 concern the use of existing areas and buildings for the accommodation of refugees. Under certain conditions, existing structural systems are made possible. For example, commercial areas and unused office space can be used for these purposes. Since the current living space capacity is not sufficient, this regulation is particularly relevant.

According to the new regulations, it is also possible to build refugee accommodation outdoors, provided they adjoin a built -up district. This applies in particular in connection with social purposes that can justify a deviation of development plans. These regulations should meet the increasing number of refugees quickly and offer the municipalities the necessary freedom of action.

participation of the citizens

The Federal Government emphasizes the importance of citizen participation in the provision of accommodation. In order to reduce the pressure on the existing capacities, other objects are therefore sought. This acquisition should help to overcome the emergency efficiently and to offer the refugee people appropriate accommodation.

The developments illustrate the urgent need and the associated challenges in refugee accommodation. Against the background of legal relief and the available resources, it is crucial that everyone involved becomes active to find and implement solutions.
