Memory in Speyer: Remember the victims of National Socialism!

On Monday, January 27, 2025, a commemoration of the day of commemoration of the victims of National Socialism will take place in Speyer. The event begins at 6 p.m. and is under the motto "Remember - remember - remind you". The organizers are the job of peace and environment of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate, the Jewish cultural community of the Rheinpfalz, the Catholic adult education in the diocese of Speyer and the city of Speyer. The venue is the Synagogue Beith-Shalom am Weidenberg 3, 67346 Speyer.

The focus of the commemoration is the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp and the persecution and annihilation of the Jewish population in Europe.

The content of the content is taken over by pupils from the Edith Stein Realschule, the Edith-Stein-Gymnasium, the high school at Kaiserdom and the Hans-Purrmann-Gymnasium. Mayor Stefanie Seiler will also actively take part in the event. The celebrations are accompanied musically by musicians from the Nikolaus-von-Weis-Gymnasium.

Admission to the commemoration is free to address a general public.

Already on Sunday, January 26th, there will be a musical journey with the Naschuwa ensemble. This takes place at 5 p.m. in the hall of the Protestant Johanneskirche, Theodor-Heuss-Straße 24, 67346 Speyer. The program entitled "Schpilt a Frejlachs" includes Klezmerstücken, Yiddish songs and its own compositions. Admission is also free here, but there is a request for donations.

A guided tour under the title "Synagogue and Jewish Life in Speyer" is planned for February 2 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. This is led by Jutta Hornung by the Speyer diocese archive. The event begins in the new "Beith Shalom" synagogue and then leads through the Jewish courtyard and the city center. Lecture on the persecution of Jews

On Wednesday, February 19, at 7:30 p.m., a lecture entitled "Persecution of Jews and Identity Policy in the Palatinate will also take place using the example of viticulture in the National Socialism period". The speaker is Dr. Pia Nordblom from the University of Mainz. The lecture takes place in the Martin Luther-King-Haus, Martin-Luther-King-Weg 1, 67346 Speyer. In the second part of the event, winemaker Lukas Krauss will present the #wein opposite racism initiative. This series of events offers an opportunity to deal with the history of the persecution of Jews and to keep the memory of the affected people awake. The city of Speyer and the institutions involved set an urgent sign against forgetting.
