On January 16, 2025, the cultural and art scene in Mainz will experience a significant moment. At 2 p.m. the new anthology entitled "The Hall-an art initiative in Mainz 1976-1982" will be presented in the Schönbornsaal. The event is headed by the head of culture Marianne Grosse and editor Harald Kubiczak.

The anthology documents the important art initiative, which was launched in 1976 by Heike-Kirsten Hoenig, Deborah Monroe, James Nitsch, Roland Siegrist, Alfred Tilp and Kristine Weis. Diehalle existed until 1982 and showed a variety of exhibitions and projects that became known beyond Mainz during this time.

A central element is an essay that deals with the background of the hall and the Mainz art association, founded in 1976. The essay draws exciting parallels to previous forums for contemporary art, especially to the Association for Art and Literature founded in 1823.

This association carried out a significant turn to modernity after its new foundation in 1920, which lasted until its dissolution in 1933. The essay also illuminates which aspects from these developments survive the post -war years and addresses two initiatives that preceded the hall.

Between 1976 and 1982, the hall presented works by numerous artists, including Olaf Auer, Lilli Engel, Gerd Fleischmann and many more. This variety contributed to the establishment of the hall as a recognized forum for contemporary art and left a lasting impression in the Mainz art scene.

The initiative is described as a formative influence on contemporary art in Mainz. In cooperation with Roland Siegrist, one of the founders, Harald Kubiczak put together the documentation to capture the important role of the hall in art history.
