Mainz prints the largest Bible side in the world - a record is celebrated!
On April 26, 2025, an impressive project was accomplished as part of the opening festival of the Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Summer: The largest Bible side in the world was officially printed. This unique action took place on the banks of the Rhine and is part of the celebrations for the 625th birthday of Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the book pressure with movable letters.
The printed Bible side has a size of 35 square meters and measures 5 meters in width and over 7 meters in length. The first page of the Gospel of John is shown from the "Shuckburgh-Bible", one of the two editions of the Gutenberg Bibles, which are exhibited in the Gutenberg Museum. The pressure was realized in the open -air in the high pressure process with a computer -milled wooden cliché. It is particularly noteworthy that a car was used as a printer press that drove through the construction during the three -hour printing campaign. Hundreds of onlookers watched the spectacle.
interactive participation and future events
Visitors had the opportunity to take part in the printing process by running over the wooden cliché. Another extraordinary action is planned for the coming Sunday: A second large -format Bible side is to be printed, in which the festival visitors should replace the printer press with their body weight. The first printed giant side will be hung up for a tour after the event was completed in the Mainz Cathedral.
This impressive printing campaign is not the first of its kind in Mainz. The city has already set up several world records, including one in the hammock chillers and the construction of the largest magnetic spherical accelerator by local students and researchers. Mainz is also home to the world's officially crooked tower in the world in Gau-Weinheim.
Cultural celebrations in Mainz
The opening of the cultural summer is also part of a whole series of celebrations that honor the late printer Johannes Gutenberg. A varied program is offered here on the Rockland Gutenberg-Bühne, which includes appearances by Mainz bands and traditional highlights such as price squares.
