Mainz takes the street: Fashion Revolution Week for fair fashion!

The Alliance Fair Friends Mainz will start participating in the "Fashion Revolution Week" next Monday. This action week, which takes place in the week around April 24th, is reminiscent of the tragic collapse of the Rana Plaza building, which occurred ten years ago

Fair Friends Mainz is an association of the Evangelical Deanery, the Bundjugend RLP and the Bundjugend Project We Care and Repair. The focus of the actions in Mainz is the information about the problems of the "Fast Fashion" and a sustainable clothing consumption. Various events are planned to raise awareness of these topics.

a tragic anniversary

April 24, 2023 marked ten years since the devastating misfortune in Rana Plaza. On April 24, 2013, the factory building collapsed in Bangladesh, whereby over 1,100 people were killed and 2,500 others were injured. This incident is considered the fourth largest industrial catastrophe in history and illustrates the urgent problems of global fashion supply chains. The knowledge gained as a result led to the demand that "nobody should die for fashion".

The fashion industry has so far not managed to bring about significant changes. Brands often continue to operate under voluntary obligations without improving the basic conditions for workers. The Bangladesh Accord on Health and Safety, which was signed shortly after the accident, now comprises 192 brands. This legally binding agreement aims to guarantee the health and security of workers in the fashion industry.

progress and challenges

A central goal of the International Accord is to promote a security culture in factories and the prevention of future security accidents through regular inspections. In addition, an independent complaint mechanism for workers should be provided.

Despite the progress, transparency in industry remains a central problem. While 48% of the large brands in the Fashion Transparency Index now disclose their first suppliers, the entire supply chain is still complex and non -transparent. In 2017, these figures were only 32%. The index also shows only slight progress in terms of animal 3 suppliers: from 0% in 2017, the disclosure rose to 12% in 2022.

The Fashion Revolution Week in Mainz is heralded with a clothing rack in which interested parties can exchange and share clothes via a digital card. This measure should not only encourage exchange, but also promote awareness of sustainable consumption.

Ten years after the Rana Plaza misfortune there is still a lot to do. The call to support organizations that work for the rights of workers in Bangladesh remains urgently necessary. The campaign week in Mainz offers a valuable opportunity to put these topics in the foreground and push for changes.
