New cycle path project: Kaiserspindel connects Mainz and Wiesbaden!
On May 7, 2025, the city of Wiesbaden announced that a new ramp for cyclists, which is referred to as the “Kaiserspindel”, is to be built on the Kaiserbrücke between Kastel, Amöneburg and Mainz. This ramp will not only enable a barrier -free crossing of the bridge, but will also be an important connection in the cycling network. The city of Mainz plans to fully finance this project, which is carried out in close coordination with Wiesbaden, as part of the federal program "Innovative cycling projects".
The new ramp will have a loop with a width of four meters and without steps. It will overcome a height difference of around ten meters, which is a significant improvement for cyclists. The existing staircase is preserved during and after the construction period, which ensures consistent use. The planning process is currently in the draft phase and is soon to be passed on for approval, which is expected by the responsible state authorities.
Technical details of the Kaiserspindel
The "Kaiserspindel" will be a landmark on the banks of the Rhine and, as a traffic structure, should mark the spatial conclusion of the city expansion in the former customs port. With a new path connection that includes a spiral ramp to the abutment of the Kaiserbrücke, it not only manages access, but also a clear view of the Neo -Romanesque bridgehead.
The construction of this ramp is carried out by a torsion stiff steel superstructure, which acts as a procession carrier. Four elliptical supports carry the ramp at even intervals, while a fifth support takes over the transition to the Kaiserbrücke. The construction follows the principle of “form follows force”, which represents an efficient and at the same time aesthetic representation of engineering. These innovative characteristics contributed to the fact that the project won the first prize in a competition whose client is the state capital Mainz.
futuristic blueprints
The first preparations for the construction of the Kaiserspindel are planned for the first half of 2026, and the construction period, including the connection work, is scheduled for about 15 months. After completing the plans, the city plans to write out a construction company to the turn of the year 2025/2026, which enables expectations after a quick start of the construction project.
The development of the cycling infrastructure, as it is expressed in this project, is essential for promoting cycling. According to a report by difu.de , comfortable bike paths are necessary to motivate more people to switch from the car to the bike. Projects such as the "Kaiserspindel" are important steps towards a safe and integrative transport infrastructure.
