Safe in the water: DLRG Mainz starts the season with a big festival!

On May 1st, the Mainz branch of the DLRG starts the new summer season with a festival in the winter harbor. This event offers a diverse program that not only includes child entertainment, but also provides DLRG boat trips and information on the history and the tasks of the DLRG association. From now on, the guard station at Mainz's winter harbor is regularly occupied, and this is until October. Trained lifeguards and boat leaders are ready to help the many people who use the Rhine in the warmer months in an emergency. Holger Michalczyk, first chairman of DLRG Mainz, emphasizes the importance of preparation and maintenance of the rescue station and the boats.

The DLRG Mainz is also faced with challenges, since the number of bathing deaths in Rhineland-Palatinate rose last year-nine people drowned in rivers. In view of the upcoming summer, the DLRG expects low water in the Rhine, which could create dangerous situations for sports boats. These circumstances require increased vigilance, because many people underestimate the dangers associated with swimming in the Rhine. For this reason, the DLRG expressly advises against swimming in this water.

urgent need for volunteers

DLRG Mainz is also urgently looking for volunteers to support their activities. The wax stations in Bingen and Ingelheim are already occupied, while the wax stations in Oppenheim and Nackenheim are only occupied by longer heat periods. In Bingen in particular, the access to the Rhine is limited, which the DLRG prompted to deal primarily with private boat trips.

In addition, there is a lack of suitable rooms for the storage of operational materials and the implementation of club activities at DLRG Mainz. Michalczyk reports on discussions with the city of Mainz, but so far there is no sustainable solution in sight.

rescue swimming courses and youth work

With regard to the offspring, the DLRG Mainz offers rescue swimming courses to acquire the German rescue swimming badges in the stages bronze, silver and gold. Participants must have chest, crawl and back swimming and have a good sporting condition. The courses contain swimming, diving and rescue techniques. From 2024, two course forms will be offered: a regular evening course with practical evenings in the Mombach swimming pool and a refresher course for already certified lifeguards.

The voluntary work of the DLRG rescue swimmers is of crucial importance. Every year, numerous people, including children, women and men, are saved out of water. In order to ensure operational capacity in the water rescue service, the DLRG trains young members in special youth work teams (JET). Around 6,400 young members between the ages of 10 and 16 are introduced to the use of waters nationwide, which should show that in addition to the preparation of an emergency, community and fun are also very important.

For the DLRG Mainz, it is important to educate society about the dangers of water and at the same time maintain its own use. The upcoming challenges in summer and the need for young people are central topics.
