Trier celebrates Marc Aurel: Opening of the state exhibition in June!

With great anticipation, the city of Trier and its visitors look at the opening of the state exhibition on the Roman Emperor Marc Aurel, which will take place on June 15, 2025. Trier, known as Augusta Treverorum and the oldest city in Germany, is considered the center of antiquity in Central Europe. During the reign of Marc Aurel, Trier experienced a first major bloom, which is characterized by monumental Roman buildings, including the famous "Porta Nigra". These impressive buildings are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attract numerous tourists every year.

In order to optimally prepare the upcoming exhibition, around 100 tour guides in the Rheinische Landesmuseum Trier were trained. The training courses that take place on six evenings consist of a mixed group of men and women between the ages of 20 and 90. Curators of the Simeonstift City Museum inform the leaders about the exhibits and the historical context around Marc Aurel, who was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 AD. Unfortunately, his reign was shaped by several wars, plague epidemic and Christian persecution.

experiences and expectations of the tour guides

Many of the tour guides already have experience with tours in Trier. Some even made a trip to Rome to deal more intensively with the story of Marc Aurel. "We hope that visitors continue to deal with the topic after the exhibition," explain the guides. The planned exhibition will include almost 400 exhibits and is distributed in two museums in Trier: The Rheinische State Museum shows Marc Aurel's life and work chronologically, while the city museum focuses on the effect of the emperor in later epochs and the question of good rule.

Special value is placed on the interaction between visitors and guiders. Interactive elements should enliven the exhibition and achieve a special effect. "The exchange with interested visitors is of great importance for us," said the tour guides. The state exhibition on Roman Emperor Marc Aurel promises to become a cultural highlight in Trier and to bring the historical influence of the emperor to life.

accompanying events and activities

To support the state exhibition, further events are offered that deal with various aspects of Roman history. On April 24, 2025, a public tour of the Obergermanisch-Raetic Limes will take place in the Cultural Center for Fortress, which offers exciting insights into construction, guarding and everyday life. On the same day, a tour of the garden culture from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages provides information.

In addition, on April 29, 2025, a lecture by Dr. MEIK WOYKE planning, who deals with the appropriation of Marc Aurels by former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. On May 3, 2025, the theme of Roman cavalry in the Kaiserthermen will be treated, part of the Roman weekends in the World Heritage Trier.

The state exhibition on Marc Aurel and the accompanying events not only promote interest in antiquity, but also strengthen the position of Trier as a cultural center of Roman history.
