Large fire brigade use: Delete several car fires on the A3!
On Thursday, April 3, 2025, around 3:48 p.m., a fire broke out on the A3 motorway in the direction of Cologne. The fire occurred between the Ratingen East triangle and the Mettmann junction. Fire brigade Ratingen was alerted by the control center Mettmann after dense swaths of smoke from the city center were visible. On site it turned out that a towing car, a Mercedes sprinter, burned to full extent.
The intensive heat of the fire was noticeable to the highway and led to parts of the adjacent embankment caught fire. The driver of the vehicle was slightly injured and received medical care on site from the emergency services from Ratingen and Heiligenhaus. The fire brigade carried out several measures for fire fighting, including securing the site and the use of three jet pipes for extinguishing work.
fire fighting and environmental measures
The fire brigade was able to quickly control the fire and completely deglaze the fuels of the towing car and the embankment. For this purpose, the Lower Water Authority of the Mettmann district was called to the site in order to take environmental protection measures. During the first deletion measures, the site had to be completely blocked at short notice before the traffic could be passed past the emergency services. The motorway police supported the fire brigade in the barrier of the danger site.
This fire message is not the first of its kind on the A3. As early as December 11, 2024, a similar incident occurred in the direction of Cologne. At that time, a taxi on the highway had caught fire. This also caused the Ratingen fire brigade to be used quickly, which brought the fire with a C-pipe and rapid attack under control. In this case, too, operating materials escaped over the entire width of the sloping road. The emergency services had to dampen the road to prevent the oil-water mixture from getting into adjacent green areas.
repeated operations and traffic disruptions
In addition to the taxi fire mentioned, there was another car fire on the A3 between the AK Breitscheid and AS Ratingen-Ost on the same day at 5:02 p.m. This fire was also deleted quickly. Traffic disruptions were the result of these missions. The closures led to Rückstaus, which had an effect on the Ratingen urban area. Fortunately, no people were injured in both vehicle fires. The fire brigade's operations were completed at around 6:05 p.m., in which numerous emergency services, including the professional fire brigade, the Homberg fire truck, the Breitscheid fire truck as well as the police and emergency services. The repeated fires on the A3 throw a light on the difficulties that exist in dealing with the increasing number of vehicle fires on the highways. However, the quick reaction of the emergency services shows the commitment and professionalism that are necessary to act in such emergencies. It is hoped that further incidents of this kind can be reported quickly and treated effectively.
